Can't do it.

When I plug my phone into the PC it just charges and nothing is recognised between them. I can't see any of the phone files on the desktop and so cannot transfer anything across.

I have googled it and searched my phone settings once plugged in but nothing. In the past I have plugged it in just to charge and had the media storage thing appear on the screen and never needed it. Now that I do need it, whenever I plug my phone in nothing happens. I am therefore having to upload videos to youtube via wifi from my phone ( 60 to 90 mins ) and then re download them to my PC afterwards which takes hours of effort.

Any ideas?

Google Photos? Let it do its thing, then a) you can download to desktop and b) you have a cloud backup of the damned things.

Have you tried another cable?
Some cables are charge only, or could be defective?

I have now changed the cable and it has recognised the device. However

As I start to transfer the MP4 file across, it comes up with an error message saying unable to do so "due to thread exit or transfer device" - whatever the hell that is. And now depsite showing a folder on my PC for the phone, when you open it the contents are all empty.

Why is EVERYTHING so fking difficult. All I am trying to do is upload a 4 minute MP4 from my phone and it is literally impossible.

Sounds like a lot more hassle than it should be ! What happened to plug it in and see it as USB storage?

Anyway, if possible try any of the suggestions above, use some cloud storage, that will be the easiest way and no iffy cables in between

Try to use the original USB cable that came with your phone, if you didn't already.
When I use a particular USB cable to connect the phone to the PC as soon as you open the phone folder, it crashes Windows Explorer.

ETA: If you have a locked screen be sure to unlock the phone when you connect it to the PC, otherwise you'll see an empty folder.
