Anyone upgraded from a 9.7 iPad to the 12.9?
Discussion
Considering this at the minute. I've got a 2017 iPad which I'm enjoying more than I thought I would but I feel like I'd like something bigger. So I'm considering last years 12.9 pro model second hand.
Everything I have now is a large screen. I have 2x 23" monitors at work. I use a 34" monitor at home and a 65" TV. Even my phone is 5.5". The iPad feels just a bit underwhelming screen wise both in terms of size and quality. I would imagine the 12.9 solves that problem but is it the too big as a tablet? I think it would be ok.
Also has anyone got the keyboard accessory and is it any better than using the onscreen keyboard as that is a frustration with the current iPad. I would imagine the 12.9 model may not need it, but still might be nice to have?

I have both sizes, and keyboards for both, oddly.
I bought the 12.x one first with a keyboard, but found I hardly used the kb as it became almost MacBook sized (and weight) when it was attached. And it wasn't thar portable, either, and felt fragile.
So I bought the 9.x with the Apple keyboard and a skinny case. This gets used as my rugged portable device, with the kb - and it's a good deal lighter in the hand, too. The 12.x has been demoted to "sofa" usage, and very rarely has the keyboard attached.
My suggestion: buy the Apple keyboard for your 9.7 and see how you get on. You can always use this keyboard if you subsequently buy the 12.x

I have a 9.7, 12.9 and new 10.5. The 12.9 is great for watching films and anything where the screen size is needed. But it is a bit weighty and cumbersome as a carry around.
The 10.5 is the best of the bunch imho, it has the Pro functionality with the pen, has a fantastic screen and is easy to carry around. Big jump over the 9.7 (Air 2 I think mine is).
Edited to add, I bought the 12.9 primarily to use with Readly, it is great for reading car mags in landscape with both pages, the 9.7 (and to a lesser degree because of the resolution the 10.5) are a bit small to do this for my eyes.

I had the 9.7” pro an upgraded to the 10.5” which on paper isn’t a big upgrade (screen size wise) but it does make a noticeable difference and is still easy to carry around.
I have found myself looking at the 12.9” a number of times and side by side for comparison but for me it is just too big to carry around. If you buy from Apple you have 14 days to try and return which might be a good option for you to try...

Not too bothered about the carrying around aspect as it will be 99% used in the house, with the other 1% on a train watching movies or reading.
I just feel as though the larger model would be easier to use in most respects, including hitting the target (i.e. hyperlinks, small buttons) as well as easier to read for my aging eyes! Also added "immersiveness" in games and video.
The alternative is of course a laptop (particularly a hybrid/convertible) but a decent one of these costs just as much or more, won't be as good for games and things like that, and has the disadvantage of running the highly strung Windows which I really CBA with after fixing Windows issues all day at work!

I bought the 12.9 when it came out, as others have said it is big and heavy with a keyboard attached. I bought the Logitech keyboard over the Apple for the backlight.
I primarily use mine when travelling abroad for business, i will leave the laptop in the hotel and just take the iPad and pencil. It's also good for watching movies on when there is nothing in English on the TV in the room. For sitting at home surfing i prefer the Air 2.
