Connexting Desktop to laptop
Discussion
I have a desktop PC
To log on i either have to log in via Admin password xxxxxx or user Ron p/w xxxxx
I also have a HP laptop and to log in i just lift the lid and enter a p/w
So far so good
I want to transfer a file from the laptop to the PC and bought a USB-USB link cable thinking i could do the transfer as i normally do with the digital camera
So plugged in both and logged in
No sign of a connection on either computer
Not having a clue on what to do next I tried the network suggestion and it asks me to input my user name and pw
I have tried my PC user name and pw but the laptop doesn't have a user name!
What would be the best way of getting these two to talk to each other
Thanks

Not sure they'll spontaneously create a network for you via a USB cable.
Do you have a USB RAM stick? Copy file to USB stick, move stick, copy file off stick is simplest for one file.
Otherwise, can you see either PC via the Network in File Explorer? You should be able to set up Sharing / Map a disk.

If both are connected to a router use Windows drive sharing. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc7708...
If no router but both have WiFi use Infrastructure mode and drive sharing. https://www.lifewire.com/infrastructure-mode-in-wi...
If small use USB Flashdrive, cheap and available from supermarkets

On the desktop, open up a command prompt:
Start -> cmd
In the command prompt window, type:
hostname
and
whoami
This will give you the name of your desktop and the username you're currently logged in as.
such as:
rondesktoppc
and
rondesktoppc\Ron
On the laptop, when prompted for a username/password to access the share on the desktop pc:
enter the username as
rondesktoppc\Ron
or whatever the "hostname" shows as above.
whoami will also work on the laptop to tell you what your username is.
You don't need the usb-usb cable if you're connected to the same wired/wireless network.
