However android phones get a heck alot more scrutiny as I guess theres more direct competition within the android market. You can also choose your flavour of best too, best camera, best screen best battery. With iPhone you just don't have that. I think it's shameful with the volumes and sheer scale of Apple Tim Cook hasn't sent something truly special to market.
The more variants, the harder it is the give a consistent user experience. They went for a closed ecosystem with limited options to give consistency.

The results would imply that the average consumer is ok with this.

It frustrates me as well but on balance I find iOS a better experience than android.

I'm in a similar boat to many, I don't really feel I need to upgrade from my 6 on the basis of what the new phones 'do'.

However it's 3 years old, and a lack of care over the last 12 months anticipating a change means it really is on its last legs. Microphone is intermittent, screen touch is a bit dodgy in the corners and its a bit beaten up.

So I do need to upgrade, the X as much as I'd like the screen size in a similar size phone and the camera I'm put off by the lack of TouchID.

The 8 is all a bit too familiar and I'm tempted by an 8+ for the camera but not convinced on the size of it...

I'd happily go for a 7/ 7+ but I haven't yet seen any good deals - the contracts are very similar priced to the 8 and to buy outright is only £150 cheaper, which I would recoup if i sold in 12 months time.

So it's looking like an 8 out of necessity and practicality rather than any real desire. Sadly despite it being 3 years since I got a new phone I'm really rather unexcited about it.

So if anyone has any good deals on the 7/7+ let me know otherwise I'll stroll into an Apple store tomorrow for a look at the 8, and I'm sure a lot of people will be doing the same out of necessity and ease rather than any great desire.

This is the point. Most people don’t give a toss about the OS or the processor or what camera it has etc, they just want something easy and intuitive.

I buy a new iPhone, and within minutes it’s set up like my old phone but has some new features, I’m sure there are better phones around but mine works great and does what I want. I pick up my iPad or iPhone, and they have the same apps and charger and accounts and passwords etc. It’s just easy,

As Vaud says, the fact that they are so common shows people like using them. If I gave my dad a Samsung whatever, I doubt he’d be able to do anything on it. Like me, he just wants his old apps etc and a seamless shift from one device to the next,

Ee are doing the iPhone 7+256gb on a 15gb a month date for £58 over 24 incl the one off fee

The iPhone 8+256 go 15gb data is just shy of £80pcm.

Exactly. I'm fairly techie and I still prefer iOS, partly because I like stuff that just works and I prefer a controlled apps environment to protect me against myself.

I get where your coming from and I too found the iOS comforting but it is still pretty limiting and to my eye the screen looks a mess if your app heavy as there little options to hide apps.

Android has simplified it's OS so as long as you get a mid range up android phone it'll run all the mainstream apps with a slickness akin to a iPhone. But if your a tiny bit interested or geeky you can get a little more.

As I say it's good that there is options out there however I'll continue to say Apple just take the Mick out of their loyal fan base.

No-one is taking the mick in a free market. I am tech savvy, and still buy into iOS.

The Google Pixel is the closest no 2 for me; I will look at the new one before deciding.

AR is such a big thing, I mean, it is huge. Look at how Pokemon Go is increasing in popularity. Oh, wait .... in reality it is still a niche, and will likely remain niche.

If TouchID had problems, they actually think that the FaceID will be perfect? Of course it will be, as Apple never get things wrong on release ....
AR will be interesting for marketing.... what will that rug look like in your hallway? Would those sunglasses suit you?

Conversely, I've had Android phones since about 2010, and would have no idea how to use an iPhone.

I've changed my phone a couple of times in the last year (one lost, one very cheap stopgap which quickly broke, now my current Lenovo). All different manufacturers, different versions of Android, and all seamlessly transferred and set up without issue (even from the lost one which I didn't have access to).

iPhones are not somehow magically different, as much as Apple would like to have us believe.

I switch between them on a near daily basis, and imho its much muchness.
IME doing something on an iPhone often takes an extra menu or click, but much of that has been resolved by the control center a couple of years ago.

Thanks Welshbeef - I've just had a look and compared to the bonkers price they're charging for the 8+ it does look good.

Looking at buying outright through and the £18 month Three sim only contract, it is much closer.

64gb 8 = £1,132/ £47 a month (24 months)
64gb 8+ = £1,232/ £51
128gb 7+ = £1,201/ £50

How does that work out for the 256Gb?

Also buying on contract the 7+256 was as flagged £57pcm so getting the 128gb version must be less than the delta you show + you don't have to buy it outright so cash flow benefit over 2 years

Really looking forward to playing with that (and happy to admit that yes, that is a deeply sad thing to admit).

people don't really care about the 8, it's all about the X
for many the Iphone is a trendy accessory and to own the 8 screams poor
someone at my work is literally getting an 8 and using it until the X arrives in order to have the latest and greatest

Not sure. I'm getting an 8. Due for an upgrade and not in love with the X and it's face recognition.
