WhatsApp is, arguably better than iMessage. Not least it is platform independent. I find I'm using it more and more.
WhatsApp is not bundled on any platform is it? I've installed it on many devices, both iPhone and Android but so few of my contacts have it it's not worth the bother. At least iMessages are received as SMS text if non-iphone recipient.

They do have a web client nowadays, not the best thing but very handy imho.
Platform dependability in case of a messaging apps is a bit imho.
I had a particular distaste for the fact that, having an iPhone and an iPad didn't allow me to read my iMessages on my computer. I should have bought an iMac for that :/ Don't know if they fixed it by now though.
Seems like in this case WhatsApp has won the battle by big margin, despite not being the greatest app imho.
Platform independence is a key factor there.
I thought I'd check if there were any phones still available when I got home from work (19:15 on Friday) and surprisingly there were still options of collecting phones in store on release day.
As I have ordered mine for home delivery, will I get it on release day? It says delivery on 22 Sept via standard shipping, which I am assuming it means that I get it on the day? Apologies if I'm being thick as custard here!

The biggest issue I see with WhatsApp is that you need a phone number for it. My boy has an iPad with no cellular connection and he uses imessage with all his friends but I still have to email him because I'm on android.

If they only had the ability to login to the account via email rather than or instead of sms then they could cleanup the messaging space IMO, especially if they had a deal to bundle in with Android. Google needs to forget messaging of their own as they have had a number of tries and given up on them but that is their style, as they did it with Wave for social as well. iMessage would be the standard if it waw opened up to non Apple devices but hell will freeze over before that happens which is a shame.
Indeed. But whatsapp is Facebook now so equally implausible re the Google deal.No idea what FB is going to do with their chat and WhatsApp long term though.

It really isn't all that hard to migrate. It'll take an hour, if that. Major services all have inbuilt migration tools. Once it's done you're ready to use any Android phone and you're open to hundreds of new devices.
I mean that I can't be arsed researching the hardware and the alternative apps and services and which devices I have that are ios only. I have something that works. I guess I just don't find phones very interesting of themselves.schmunk said:

Given they open up iTunes and other apps to Windows, I don't understand why they don't provide at least a Windows client.Or go the whole way and open source it.

but most people have a phone on which they can install WhatsApp, and then access it on a different device which isn't a phone (like the chaps boss on his iPad)
anyway, more options never hurts

Boy, not boss Which makes the lack of cellular perfectly rational, all children being data monsters.but most people have a phone on which they can install WhatsApp, and then access it on a different device which isn't a phone (like the chaps boss on his iPad)
