I will hold judgement until I see it in action, hopefully it works great.
the big problem is- you still need to use your hand/ fingers to use the phone. I appreciate the technology in the facial recognition stuff, but ultimately I need to use my fingers to operate a touch screen phone. I need to either move the phone (lift to wake) or touch the screen to wake the phone/ activate the faceID thing. my hand is already on the phone- so why do I now need to introduce another thing to unlock the phone?!?!
as other say- the touch ID was now so slick/ responsive/ fast that almost instantly by taking the phone out of your pocket or just touching the home button to wake the phone was enough to unlock.

Maybe in the future you might be able to say a wake word like "Hey Siri" and the screen will wake up and look for you then unlock. I agree that this seems like a step backwards though.the big problem is- you still need to use your hand/ fingers to use the phone. FaceID just smacks of a panic fix. Couldn't get TouchID working behind the screen so they introduced FaceID. I just can't see the X as a finished, complete product, which is very un-Apple.
Impressive bit of hardware for a panic fix, from what I've read it's basically a Kinect in there.Which is why I am not upgrading my '6' to a 'X' - instead I am going for a '7 plus' for a year or two to see what happens with the X and the X1 afterwards.
As the 8/8 plus is really just a '7s' in disguise, I have bought a mint, year old 256gb '7 plus' for £500 that will happily tie me over until I find an iPhone I REALLY want. The 'X' is bound to have issues that need to be tweaked/resolved. Who knows - with the X1 might Apple might take a completely different direction.

I would echo this. At least that is my perception. As the 8/8 plus is really just a '7s' in disguise, I have bought a mint, year old 256gb '7 plus' for £500 that will happily tie me over until I find an iPhone I REALLY want. Lets face it, it was the only thing Apple could think of so they could do away with the bezels. They should have put TouchID on the back at least. Form over function, but lets be honest, the main purpose of the X is to show off to your mates / strangers. Other than the improved screen:body ratio, I don't see what else it brings to the party over an 8+.

I think you've hit the nail there. My contract on my 6S ran out yesterday and I had a play with my mates new 8+. It's really nice. I'm going SIM only this week and holding off buying until I can see what discounted deals I can get on the X. Not because of FR or anything else it has. It's not much different spec wise to the 8+. The only reason I'm waiting is that is has the advantage of a bigger screen which I want but it's a smaller form factor. Given the price difference, I think I can put up with a bigger phone and I suspect I'll end up with the 8+ Saying that, I'm still reeling that my headphone amp and expensive headphones will have to run via an adaptor into the lightening port. I know, I know, let it go...

I'm now strongly inclined to swap my 6+ for an 8+ for much the same reasons, plus the fact that the 6+ has become so slow and flakey with the known touch screen issue (which it was replaced for only 6 months ago). I'm not sure I can hang on for an X at this rate, even if I wanted to.Saying that, I'm still reeling that my headphone amp and expensive headphones will have to run via an adaptor into the lightening port. I've used a USB DAC / headphone amp for a while via lightning so loss of 3.5mm jack didn't bother me.

I do know that I find the way that fingerprint scanners don't work with wet or dirty hands a bit of a pain in the arse, but then I have outdoor hobbies.
In the summer, with slightly sweaty hands, I find the finger ID refuses to work, face ID is therefore a tempting feature.Or a towel.

By all accounts, Apple thinks of / copies / steals all sorts of st that it tests to destruction for years before it gets to production. For example, the original iPhone came from the initial iPad test hardware, which then had to wait even longer for production. It may not rock your boat, but generally whatever they finally put into production does work well - their production scales are too large now to put out stuff that is entirely crap.

If Tesco is doing nearly £50 per month for the iphone 8 I wonder what the iphone X will cost?
What's the point over an LG or Motorola for so much more? Bar bragging rights?
As a note my daughter , who has now evolved 4 opposing thumbs, due to being in the phone generation, can put her password into the phone in less than 3.5 nanoseconds. Not sure given this she needs to have face recognition or a finger print from one of her 4 thumbs ......

You can buy a new smartphone for £60. You’re into diminishing returns from there on in, just as a Dacia Sandero will get you from A-B.What's the point over an LG or Motorola for so much more? Bar bragging rights?
Well my 8 arrived. Nice bit of kit. I attempted to restore from a backup of my 6 using iTunes and my phone is now completely bricked, stuck on a white screen with the apple logo and progress bar. Unresponsive to anything and everything.
Not ideal, Genius appointment arranged for Friday.
