Well colour me surprised. That's a result impressive service.
Having said that, it should in no way detract from the quality of goodwill that Apple provide.

I took the early train to Birmingham, popped in the genuine Apple shop at 9am.
By 9:45 I was chatting to a Genius, who was gobsmacked that’s Stormfront had asked £50 just to check the MacBook out.

He was also gobsmacked they had said the delaminating screen recall had expired, told me it covers a minimum 3 years.

And triple gobsmacked they had told me the battery was not covered, as that should last a minimum 2 years from new.

He did test it and said something is wrong with the logic board, or related parts. He said Apple will change the battery and screen for free if I want, but he has to ask about the logic board. I will hear back in a few days.

Well that's good news (ish)

Just as well you don't depend on it!

If they were recommended by Apple it's probably worth asking if they can investigate it, as it sounds like Storm aren't providing anywhere near the customer service they expect.

I was confused why you were charged any money as I've never been charged at an Apple Store, but I've also never done anything out of warranty.

Fingers crossed for a good result though.

I shall wait and see how the Mac book repairs go, and then see about lodging a complaint with Apple about Stormfront. Apple are the people who booked the appointment, so they should be aware of what is going on within their inner circle.

You mean throw down another £50 and have it sent off for two weeks again? Hope this time they will fix it for free?

Apologies if I sound disillusioned, but I seriously doubt some operative in a store is going to step forth and tell me “behold, an out of warranty machine that has failed, refund the guy his money, fix it for free”.

I could simply walk in and hope to speak to a manager, someone who can make decisions, keep my fingers crossed.

Tomorrow I will go and collect the laptop from the current trusted Apple retailer it is in, and try to get something out of their people. If no joy, maybe I will pop into the Birmingham main dealer.
That's essentially what happened to me. The machine was probably 3-4 years out of warranty.
They plugged it into some diagnostic thing in the Apple store which tested all the systems and found out what was up. This took about 5 minutes and was free. They accepted that the logic board failure was a known problem and replaced for free.

I would explain that you feel a laptop failing after just 18 months is not fit for purpose. It isn't.
I had a MB Pro with a faulty logic board, too. They replaced it with a "new" one, as part of a forced replacement program (lawsuit). Turns out those new logic boards were just overhauled junk, and mine failed again within a few months. Reading on the net confirmed that this happened to most people who had this repair.

I own a Lenovo P50 now. Apple seems to have moved to making overpriced toy computers for status seekers, so no loss.

I’m hoping that they will see the logic of giving us a free new laptop, instead of replacing the screen, battery, bottom case and logic board. Essentially it will BE a new one with all that changed out.

If they actually want money for replacing the logic board, but give all the rest for free, I will have to have a think about how much it is worth to us before shelling out the cabbage.

You could buy a decent laptop for the cost of the logic board

(it just works - except it doesn't)

I used Apple stuff for nearly 20 years. I will spare you a rundown of the product faults I have dealt with (as well as my rant about how they no longer see the need to make computers with ports or that are actually upgradable).

I agree with the previous poster: invest the cash into a real laptop. Learning the hard way is better than not learning at all.

I shall allow up to £300 for the logic board repair, any more and I will tell them not to bother.

Then we have a virtually free new laptop, with a warranty of some sorts, hopefully.

I have had great service from the two Apple iPads I have had. The first one worked without a problem for three years, then I asked the wife to hold it for me for 15 minutes while we were in the dentist.

Later in the day I noticed a chip in the corner of the screen and case.....

......she had dropped it on the tile floor in the only 15 minutes any other person but me had touched it in three fking years! A few days later it started glitching.

Next one has now worked without fault for three years or more, but occasionally has a minor screen issue when turned on. It has done thousands of hours of use though.

They are a godsend when working offshore, loaded with movies, books, a crystal clear display and long battery life.

If they try to charge you for the logic board, just be persistent, ask for the manager etc... You won't end up paying for it. Especially after you make clear how disappointed you are with the 'authorised reseller' people.

I collected a replacement charger for my 5-year-old MacBook Air the other day, no charge. They're very fair about out-of-warranty fixes.

If they do charge you full price for the logic board repair it will be far closer to £1000 than £300. Logic Boards are not cheap sadly.

Here’s a snip of the email they sent immediatly after the appointment with a Genius. Looks like the logic board is just over £300 plus labour, vat etc.

Them giving me a new laptop gratis sounds like a good idea to me. biggrin

I shall see what they say after the weekend.

Why not look at seeing if the household insurance covers it?

You used to hear stories of them replacing the laptop instead of repairing it when it failed multiple times but not sure if that still happens.

Logic Board seems very cheap there, considering it makes up the majority of the hardware.

Anyway hopefully you get some even better news in a few days.

I thought about dropping it down the stairs actually.... as the house insurance would only cover damage, not failure or breakdown.

Stormfront did say the logic board fix involved a new hard drive, but the Apple Genius says not, so, not sure who is right.

I'd say the Apple guy.
