What old tech cant you bear to throw out ?
Discussion
Stuff I still have that still works.....
Not quite hardware, but I can't bear to throw out vinyl or tapes, or the record players and tapedecks I used to play them on, despite not having touched them in years.
- a BBC B with a disc drive and a halfdul of games like Thrust, revs & Elite
- A Commodore C64 and a tape drive and some games.
- An IBM PS2 Model M keyboard (so incredibly heavy! but wonderfully clacky)
- A series 1 Ipod
- A series 2 Ipod
- A series 3 ipod which i still actually regularly use.
- A number of PSTN and ADSL Modems, hubs and switches.

My BBC micro is in my old dear's garage.
I have plenty of LPs (and a deck to play them on !).
Audio tapes - never had very many anyway and certainly none now.
Video tapes - I had have quite a few (30, 40 odd ?) until about 3 years ago. Then when it dawned on my that I did not have anything to play them on, and if I wanted them I could get them on DVD for very little money, I hoofed the lot in the wheelie bin.
The thing with all this old tech stuff is what do you do with it ?

I bought a 5th Gen iPad this week, which will leave my current iPad2 Retina Display redundant, after only 5-years. The case and screen are immaculate, it is just the stuff inside that is useless.
But I won't be able to just pop it in the bin, even though it has been a real pain to use for the last 2-years.
I was looking for a cable this week so dived into my big box. There were 2 centronics printer cables in there, plus a few floppy disks. Perhaps they will become antiques collectables in a few years?

Floppy disks? Doubt it!But I won't be able to just pop it in the bin, even though it has been a real pain to use for the last 2-years.

Got loads of old PC components that will never come in useful. I keep a working Pentium 2 computer under my desk running Windows 98 in case there are any 3dfx games I fancy playing, which will not run on a modern PC or virtual machine. Haven't booted it up in years...
The only old tech I still use is an Naim amplifier and Pioneer radio and CD player, but even then I don't use it and tend to use my PC and PC speakers for music or the little DAB radio in the kitchen. It's just more convenient and if I want to hear music loudly I use headphones with the PC as I would disturb my neighbours if I fired up the hi-fi.

Err I can't bear to throw this away
Battery life is brilliant and I have all my old spreadsheets on it for mpg and running costs - I still use it occasionally
this replaced it (well several of them over a few years)
I now only use it to do data logging from the ECU of the LC but as a result I had a succession of windows phones/smartphones until about two years ago when I switched to apple.
