Pretty sure when I had my X i couldnt simply swipe up I had to wait for the little close sign to appear?
Yes, it's swipe up and tap to get the red close sign to appear, but once the sign is there you can swipe up to close each app rather than actually having to click on the the sign itself.

It makes it a lot slower to close just one app, but hardely any difference if you are closing quite a few at a time. It is something they will probably improve in a future update.

I had a look in the Apple store at the weekend. Firstly, it looks really nice although still not a massive departure from other iPhones. Definitely the most "premuim" phone in look and feel that I've looked at. I did like the OLED screen. I also like the size of the device with the larger screen. Not sure about the lack of home button yet, I'd get used to it but I'm OCD about double tapping and closing applications so obviously there's a new way to do this on the X I'd have to discover.

Overall, I just didn't really get the sense it was too much of a step up to my 6S to justify such a large spend. I'm also still not ready to give up the headphone jack so I'll run with my SIM only contract until my phone grinds to a halt then look at the options later.
There is some debate about closing apps actually being bad for the battery - some opinions say that you should stop background refresh and leave them open.

https://www.wired.com/2016/03/closing-apps-save-ba...

The home button feels so 'last week' once you have a phone without one. FaceID opens the phone immediately and Apple Pay (or apps that need ID) feel more seamless.

The question is - what does this phone do that a 6 or 7 (or 8) can't do? And the answer is, not a lot to be honest. I guess it's a bit like having one wrist watch over another - they all perform the same job.

My only gripe is phone call sound quality. For the first time with an iPhone, I am struggling to hear and struggling to be heard... I may take mine into Apple to see if it's an issue unique to mine.

My X is still borked. Genius Bar appointment booked for tomorrow lunchtime in Covent Garden. I presume that they will have phones available that they can swap out for my broken one? I’m not going to be happy if I have to send mine back to Apple and wait for a replacement to be sent.....

There was a thread (in the last couple of days) that I now can't find, explaining how to revive a bricked phone - some special mode requiring it to be connected to iTunes and a combination of button presses.

I am sure Apple Covent Garden will give you a new phone and will have the stock to do so.

It seems, from a bit of reading, that the old phone (that someone upgrades from) needs to have the very latest iOS. Then backed up... the X, before doing anything else, needs to have the latest iOS. Only then can the X be restored from the last back up.

No joy with DFU mode then?

I've been looking to see if there are any X's in stock near to me and reserving one or two and cancelling my pre-ordered phones.

They are in stock here and there in 64gb, but the 256's are still out of stock at my nearest 12 stores.

I'm still surprised at how popular these phones have been, I managed to pick up my 7+ 256 just a week or so after release, the X's are proving far more elusive.

Check at 6am on the dot. They update stocks online and you should be able to reserve one.

Yes good point, that's what I did to get my 7, although I think I started looking at 08:00.

Will try again in the morning smile

i have a spare ipX 256gb which I will be returning tomorrow if anyone wants to save any wait. Still sealed - one of the chaps in the office prefers his iP Plus weirdly.

Poor form quoting oneself but hey-ho...

Got to store yesterday at 12:10 for a 12:15 appointment, was seen at 12:20 and was out of the store again at 12:35.

Explained the problem to the Genius guy who grabbed one of their MacBooks, plugged my phone in and hey presto, the restore worked! No idea why - I had tried exactly the same thing as he did about 10 times over the previous couple of days. A bit irritating but there you go. He did say that their laptops have nothing but iTunes and their own internal diagnostic software on it so it could have been a contention with something else on my iMac that was preventing the recovery mode from working.
Set the X up as a new phone and then restored from a fresh backup of my 6 and it’s all fine now.

Already deciddd that I’m not a fan of TrueTone - too yellow for my liking but I might give it another go today in daylight to see how it compares.

Liking FaceID a lot - I used to get annoyed that TouchID wouldn’t work if my hands were even slightly wet.

Not really played with it much other than that though - I'm sure there are some settings that I won’t like but it took me ages to get my 6 how I liked it so it’s just a case of tweaking here and there.

You’re not alone with iMacs not behaving. I have constant iTunes niggles. Plug in phone, whatever process I’m attempting -fail-fail x 6 then works on the 7,8th etc. Somewhat irritating.

Discovered that I now need new headphones!

Been using a pair of B&O in-ear headphones on my 6 that were designed for Android - always worked fine with the exception of the volume controls. Plugged them into the X via the DAC dongle this morning for the train journey into work and have an annoying rhythmic clicking sound whoch also interferes with the music. Grrrrr.

Oh well, it’s Black Friday today isn’t it wink

Got a X 64gb on o2 contract that’s boxed that I’ll I’ll be returning, since I managed to get a sim free X 256gb this morning to pick up at my local store.

Works out much cheaper than my contact with a three SIM card.

Managed to reserve in store collection and got mine today. Looks very good so far and really impressed with the setup where I've used my current iPhone 6 and it "pairs" to the new phone.

All good however I'm stuck at "verifying update to iOS 11.1.2. This seems to take all focus and I can't do anything whilst it's verifying. Setup doesn't seem to complete without passing this stage. Any ideas?

Have you tried (from unlocked) pressing vol up, vol down and then holding the power button for a hard reset to see if that unsticks the verifying issue?

I've tried soft restart but that didn't make any difference. I will try hard reset next after the "verifying update" prompt goes smile
I suppose it's best to setup as new phone instead of trying to use the new fangled "pair and restore" feature.

edit: Tried the volume up/down then hold power and looks like it just restarts the phone (without the Power Off slider). Still have issues updating to iOS 11.1.2 says software ready to install but stuck on verifying frown The annoying thing is that when that "Verifying Update" pop up comes up I cannot do anything else but to wait for it to fail. Perhaps it's the WiFi at work I will try again when I am home.

Loving mine after nearly a whole day lol. Kind of surprised at how much I miss the battery percentage indicator though. I know you can drag down from top right and see it but it was better when it was just ‘there’.

I’d be happy to see the percentage value rather than a battery indicator.....
