Any consensus on what a good case is for these? Happy to spend on something that will genuinely protect it...

I bought the Apple folio case. It's pretty good. The phone switches off when it closes, and on when it's opened. Obviously doesn't have to be the Apple case to do that. smile

I have put an Anker screen protector on it (the first phone where I've used a screen protector). Firstly because the screen seems hideously expensive to replace and secondly because Anker have an alignment system for the protector that ensures a perfect and near invisible fit.

I'm going to try some other cases, but the folio one seems pretty good.

I've ordered a battery case too - which is shipping from China, so due in the next month.

Pretty much agree with what you've said there.

I've mostly forgotten about how much I paid, but when I remember it does make me ponder whether or not it's really a £1149 phone (more if you count AppleCare+) I'm holding in my hand. Having said that, I use my phone daily, I almost always carry it, so in that respect the value for money aspect is better than, say, my MBP.

Unfortunately £999+ halo phones are going to be the norm now, at least from Apple but I expect others will follow suit. The price tag hasn't put consumers off, there has been queues outside the stores, etc like the old days.
Indeed. If people think about value for money they'd never buy an iPhone X, but if you can disregard that it is a great phone. Obviously, a lot of people can disregard that! Buying on a contract or the Apple Upgrade Programme definitely helps here, a lot of people who have picked one up wouldn't have been able to justify or afford it if they had to put the £1,000+ out in one go.

I do find it a bit galling when I think about the price. I recently bought a new iMac - a very powerful do-it-all computer with a lovely 27" screen. That was less than twice the price of this phone and I am quite aware that the iMac has a heavy Apple premium built in as well.

The only reason for the price of the iPhone X is that it's precisely the price Apple can get away with charging. Look at all the people buying it, it's not a barrier. I honestly believe they could change £2,000 for it and people would still be able to do the mental gymnastics they need to do to justify it.

Not the only reason.

According to a few sources, it costs $548 to build the X against the 7's $248. Apple are making a 32% margin on the X against 62% on the 7. A 32% margin for the R&D costs is pretty reasonable.

Yes it is an expensive phone - but it is supposedly the most expensive phone to build.

You could even up the repair cost to ~£1000 for the glass and it would still be the "economic" thing to do if you drop it biggrin

I have the apple Silicone case in White - I have used their silicone cases and leather cases for a few years now and they hold up really well - but the only issue with the leather is how much it absorbs in terms of oils and colours from holding/using it

the Silicone on the X seems to be similarly decent to 6/6s/SE/7 cases so heres hoping! smile

£285 for the iPhone X
£244 for Note 8
£235 for the Galaxy S8
£189 for the iPhone 8

Across the expected sales, R&D cost is expected to be £11/device for the iPhones and £10/device for the Samsungs. Whichever way you look at it, there's huge margins in flagship phones because that's what people will pay for them.

I guess thats the cost of buying a lot of the parts off their main competitor Samsung, especially one of the most expensive parts of the phone - the OLED screen.

Tbh Samsung AMOLED screens have been years ahead of the iPhone screens. The only possible reason to hold them off was cost cutting...

That’s with o2 I had bad service with EE in my area but o2 it’s any better.

I had 5gb data with my old contract I upgraded to 10GB that seems to be enough for me. Obviously some months I use less some more.

Did you go for that deal?

No not signed up yet. I've been with EE for years and wanted to give them a chance but my partner works for BT and she gets really good deals. The standard BT deal isn't as good (£250 upfront, £55 per month with 3GB and unlimited calls and texts.) I'm just waiting for the discounted deals to come through. I'm not bothered about staying with EE though so that o2 deal looks good if BT can't beat it.

I just sorted mine this morning and was told two weeks delivery - and then I get a text saying delivery tomorrow!

Vodafone business; £66 for the phone up front (256GB) - then £70 per month for unlimited calls / texts and 30GB data. And then, business traveller and insurance is included also. So, I can use UK minutes across Europe and have 300 minutes outside of Europe. I think that's everything. Fingers crossed I like the thing; I'll miss the home button I fear.

Thanks for the tips on the cases and screen protectors. I've bought based on recommendations here.

You won't miss the home button imo. It took very little time for me to forget that it isn't there.

The thing I've found most jarring is that Control Centre is now dragged down from the top right, rather than anywhere from the bottom.

It's now very odd to go back to a button - I used someone's 7 to look for something and I found it strangely old fashioned! smile

Totally bizarre how ten years of home button presses disappeared within about 3 or 4 hours. Got used to it almost immediately.

Especially with people shouting about three years ago when it became mainstream to remove the front buttons "I could never do without a physical home button.".
Put them in the same boat with "Over 4 inch screen?? How big do you want your phone to be?".
