Like anyone who bought an X - an entirely new iPhone - didn't realise they were beta testing a new direction. The brilliance of Apple is getting consumers to pay (a lot) for their market research.
How exactly is it beta testing? I will beta test iOS 12 in the summer on my non-beta hardware iPhone X.

I am not sure how experimental the X is..seems overblown.

I upgraded from my iPhone 7...dead easy to do..mainly point one phone at the other.

Yes, some features are new but it is really no big learning curve and the camera ( my main reason to do it ) is a very big advance. I have had nothing very difficult..took the half hour tutorial from an Apple rep and had my question answered easily...quick look at gestures and camera and all was well. Its the same OS after all.

For those that have the X how are you finding it a few months in?

I thought I would like the Face ID function but for me it's a bit hit or miss especially when I'm in the car and it's in its mount, or when I am lying in bed. It's also got an annoying bug where the display doesn't auto lock like it should (not uncommon on apple support forums).

The camera is pretty good though. With hindsight, I think this has finally cured me of my Apple "fanboi" tendency of always having to have the latest and greatest.....

Great battery life, great camera, actually using the portrait mode a lot more than I thought I would. FaceID is rubbish, I ended up using the passcode about 50% of the time. The screen is ok, nothing special and scratches quite easily. It still feels nice to hold without being overly slippery.

Now that the battery life has been sorted I can't see me changing from this for ~5 years.

No issues with FaceID, except when I'm in bed. This seems to be universal. In the car, it is easier to use than TouchID with the phone in its holder.

I like it. Battery life is great (I was sceptical about this on this thread somewhere I think), it easily lasts a working day. Face ID works very well for me - fingerprint ID was very hit and miss on my 7, faceID works 99% of the time. I don't use it in the car other than music which I start playing before setting off. Officer.

I always switch off rather than auto lock - so can't comment. It's set to a minute to auto off, but I rarely leave it to do that.

Camera great.

I prefer the slightly bigger screen size and really like not having a home button. FaceID for bank type apps is really seamless.

The only downsides are:

1 The design is slippy glass and it's moderately heavy. I do NOT want to drop it.
2 They don't seem to work well with folio cases. The microphone in the rear lenses is for ambient noise - folio cases, when folded back, seem to mess with the ambient noise filters and reduce call quality.

I had thought with my 7 that iPhones couldn't really add anything to make me buy an X. I bought one anyway. Worth the extra cash? Hmmmm - marginal yes. Will I buy the next iteration? Really not sure, the X would be hard to improve.

Slight confession, I have managed to date with a 64GB 4s for the last 6 years, its chronically slow now for everything. The volume button down doesn't work and I am not sure the power button will function in the near future. Like most Apple stuff the battery will simply die anywhere between 1 and 40% depending upon the temperature.

Now I have about £550 of John Lewis vouchers and had been waiting for the X to come out, I have seen people at work who have them and they look ok. My wife has a normal 7 which I have used and obviously it lovely compared to my 4s.

I have a crappy Nokia for work which has a larger screen and to be honest I prefer that larger size, more useful for web, email etc. Therefore I am looking at either a 7+, 8+ or an X. The 7 and 8+ are both the same size obviously and I think the 7 chassis will be more durable, its that vs wireless charging.

The X screen looks about the same size but I repair costs look significant, then again I have managed to not break a 4s and that has been abused a fair bit.

Should I just get a SE (32 GB) to tide me over until the revised X is out later this year (I have been always been waiting for the next model) or get a 7+ 128 GB. I would prefer a 256 GB (8+) but that's £919 and then I am thinking about spending another £80-130 for the larger X.

Will the 8 and 8+ get dropped or the X changed significantly this year?! Any thoughts, I am not hung up faceID, a few people at work reckon I should wait and see what the S9 is like in the next 4 weeks. Generally all my music is Itunes plus CD's imported, so could always run a iOS version on Samsung.

Too much bloody choice.

A revised SE is also due very soon by all reports

I have an X and love it, but it’s no better than my wife’s 8 really IMO other than the camera (forgetting faceID etc...)

There’s always a reason to wait and if you can great, otherwise just buy what you want and fits the bill.

For reference I came to the X from and SE and loved the SE form factor but the draw of the X was too much (and I’m weak willed for new tech lol)

I think it really struggles with my beard. Laying in bed it has no chance. I really hope they reintegrate touchID into the display on the next generation, it’s just better.

Had mine since a few weeks after launch. Love it. Face ID works 99% of the time, even with beard. Those struggling in bed should hold it a bit further away, works for me perfectly then. Also works better in the car than Touch ID. It feels weird and dated using my iPad with its button and thick bezel.

I think it’s a vast improvement over the older style phones and the notch is not annoying in the slightest. Is it worth the money? Maybe.

No issue with my beard and I didn't have a beard when I set it up. It also copes fine with glasses. I don't think Touch ID was better.

I grew a beard for a week (shaved it off this morning as I look like a retired terrorist) and sometimes wear glasses. FaceID works fine with or without fungus and furniture.

I wouldn't want to go back to touch ID - I found it very unreliable particularly if my hands were at all hot.

couple of minor issues

1) got a scratch on the screen... really annoying as I never put anything else in my pocket with the phone and haven't dropped it or placed it down face down. The screen on my 7 was like new after a year!

2) when holding the phone in 1 hand I use my little finger to support the weight of the phone. The speaker holes at the bottom of the phone chafe against the skin on my finger. Comparing the speaker holes against my works phone (iphone SE) the holes feel much less smooth (manufacturing process?)

With regards Faceid, i was struggling every now and then with it but there is an option for requires attention, if you uncheck this it is a lot better.

Totally agree. Face ID wasn't one of the features I was looking forward to when I got the X, but it is one of them I'd least like to lose now. I find it almost 100% reliable. Touch ID wasn't far behind in terms of reliability, but Face ID just feels more natural and intuitive.

The screen definitely seems less scratch resistant than previous models. Under the strong light in my kitchen, I notice that mine has got several light scratches on it after a few months. My 7+ was like new after a year as was the 6 that preceded it and that was almost two years old by the time I changed.

A lot of people are reporting how easily scratched the X is. Mine currently lives in a Beyzacase (leather sleeve) and is currently unscathed. But it certainly sounds more vulnerable to being marked than the 7.

Where I live I Canada Staples ( office supplies)applies
a liquid protector for the screen than dries very hard. Takes fifteen minutes. No impact on performance, zero scratches.

I have found the Apple leather case on mine to be fine. I got iSmash to put a glass protector on screen before I took it out of the box. Its great so far. Battery life is amazing for sure. Camera is decent.

MY biggest gripe is how stupid it is you cannot swish apps away to close without holding it down first, WHY|?!
