The Apple folio case?

No reduction in call quality when using it?

How often does anyone do this though? You only need to kill a background app if there’s an issue with it. Can’t remember the last time I needed to do this.

I imagine it's to avoid accidental closing.

I've not noticed any issues with calls so far with that case...?

It was a huge problem with mine - call quality was awful. It's all to do with the front flap being folded around the back and over the camera lens to make a call. Within that lens is a microphone that monitors background noise - the covering of it during a call caused the problem. No case - perfect sound.

I think it’s the eyes that need to be deemed to be looking at it, whatever the reason from a hit rate of 60% by doing this its gone up to 90%

Yep. Security, so someone can't force you to open it or do so when you're asleep. You have to actively look at it.

I have to do it frequently with the HSBC business banking app as it's impossible to log out with out it immediately trying to log back in (with Face ID) although I should really remember to log out after each use!

I've went back to the iPhone 7 today (from the X) and I think I prefer it....I just can't get on with Face ID and prefer the home button. This is a small point but I had the X in a case (wouldn't risk a £1k phone without one), whereas it's less important with the 7 and it just feels much nicer in the hand/pocket.

Well that didn't last long. The iPhone 7 is great, but the X screen is just so much nicer so I have decided to keep it. I wasn't sure about the "tru-tone" display but it really is much nicer to use.

I know that some people have mentioned that the X screen is scratching more easily and I couldn't think why this would be given Apple always trumpet how much harder the glass is on new iPhones. I was listening to a podcast today which suggested it is softer to make it less likely to shatter...not sure if that makes sense but they were convincing enough in their explanation.

Iphone X prices dropped by £40 in Argos and JL. Stock clearing for the upcoming rumoured discontinuation? When is the next apple event?

I'd be very, very surprised if Apple discontinue the X. It was marketed as the technological pinnacle of the iPhone's history and the most premium of premium devices. Discontinuing it would be disastrous because:

  • their biggest fans have paid a LOT of money to get one, a lot of them accepting it was incredibly expensive for what it is
  • no company has ever shot something in the head quite that quickly before, especially Apple
  • because of the last point, you'd expect a panic reaction which would kick their share price square in the nuts
If there are plans to kill it, we'll never, ever know. It'll just continue whilst a supply mountain diminishes and they can merge the SKUs with another line.

New iPhones (except the revised SE) are unlikely to be announced before late August early September with a late September early October release

The X won’t be killed before then, but likely will be then if the rumour sites are to be believed

A revised SE is slated for launch soon-ish but that remains unconfirmed.

The reduction is probably more about having a large amount of high value inventory sat around and wanting to liquidate it as year end approaches

That's going to be a big part of it, certainly. I also suspect that demand tapered off a lot quicker than they had initially predicted, which caused slack in the supply chain, which can only be resolved by cutting production far more than they normally would, which in turn is what has probably led to the discontinuation rumours.

All of the rumours about them killing off the X have come from an analyst report that has been widely misinterpreted.

The prediction is that when 'X2' or whatever it is called materialises, the X won't continue on as the budget model in the same way the 7 carried on at a cheaper price when the 8 was released.

I think that is probably exactly what will happen. It will be even more difficult to sell the X2 at £1,200 or whatever they will want if the almost-as-good X is still sitting there in the range at significantly less.

I don't get the rumours.

The X is the first iPhone in years that actually looks like it was released in the right year.
If they have a problem with sales, they can just drop the price a couple of hundreds.

My guess is that the new iPhone (9 or 11) will look like the iPhone X but won't be called X(S).

That way they "drop" the X, in name only. They should actually discontinue the main line of phones, and replace it with the X.
A lot of people that didn't get the X because of price will then be convinced they can get an "X" for a lower price.

Basically it would be dropping the price of the phone without losing face, which is by far the most important thing for Apple at all times.

I don't suppose Apple will want to alienate buyers who paid full price for the X by dropping the price after 12 months.

As someone who always buys the latest phone, it will be interesting to see what comes next - if it's an X-Lite (apologies) then that wouldn't attract me but may help to drive more to the X?

But that's what they do every year. Last years phone continues at a reduced price (sometimes with a shake up of storage options) and the new phone takes it place in the price scale.

Most places are suggesting the current X will be replaced by an upgraded version in to different sizes. Whether the current X continues as a lower priced phone or they leave the phones with home buttons in the position remains to be seen.

If rumours are to be believed, the uptake of the X wasn't that great.
Next year they can re-release a reissue of the X as the 11, make a bigger X as the 11+ and then think of another colour and bob's your uncle.
Might even put a fingerprint scanner in the screen as Synaptics/Vivo seem to have it working properly.
But knowing Apple that could take another 3 years though (don't want to increase the BOM and decrease margins).
