The reason apple devices grind to a halt after a few years is because they force older devices to be updated
No they dont - no upgrades are pushed to devices and mandated to be used - a notification appears that an upgrade in iOS is available but this is totally optional, and very easy to decline - plus for a short period of time after the public release downgrading is also very possible and easy

Turned out that Carphone Warehouse was a good shout. They have supplied my new SIM free X (from which I write) and the Apple store is still showing a 10 day wait. I’ve cancelled the order.
I've cancelled my Apple order - despite ordering it at 8.01am on the 27th its not due to be delivered 'til between 24th Nov and 4th Dec - and getting my X next week from CPW.

Played with the X in the Apple store for 15 minutes and even listened to a store demonstration only to nip off to O2 and buy an iphone 8+ 256GB for £60 per month. I liked the X but did'nt see the value in the extra features. The 8+ is fab though.

It is very odd. The main school of thought is that Apple has throttled supply because they like seeing queues outside their stores and the effect that has on hype/demand.

I can understand that (I suppose), but it makes little sense doing that if you can just walk in and buy one anywhere else!

I would like to get the iPhone x, but as I can't stomach paying over 1k for a phone I think my 7 will be the last iPhone I own frown

Well i've had mine since Saturday - what can I say, its a phone!! - although i don't think i've used it for a call yet !!

Screen is very good, you can turn it up so its actually too bright - lack of home button takes 5 mins to get used to, some of the other gestures I had to look up (screen grab and how you get the control centre)

The notch is irrelevant - because of the aspect ratio if you're watching a video full width its chopping the top / bottom off anyway - so you can't get full screen.........lots of apps don't use the full screen yet but i'm sure that'll come.

Facial recognition is brilliant - just works.

The cost - apple stuff is expensive, they're selling it for what they can get for it - its slightly annoying that they've translated $1149 into £1149 but there are way cheaper alternatives if you can't stomach the cost.

£60 per month for a phone? So glad I don’t have to pay for mine.

The X is good so far. It needed an iOS update to 11.1 and is performing well. Seems quick and slick.
Early days but are you gonna run it without a case / screen protector? Or are you not fussed about using it until such time as you get those things?
I bought an Apple leather folio case for it - which is ok. I ran my 7 with the Apple battery pack which was excellent - I don't know if Apple will create a battery pack for the X so I've ordered a generic one from Amazon but delivery is not until the end of the month as I assume it ships from China.

Never bothered with a screen protector - just careful where I put it. Back pocket or jacket pocket with nothing else.

I ordered a cheap case from eBay, arrived today, don’t like it so I’m still going without a case.

I’ll wait to see what Mont Blanc produce, I can’t see me paying £100 for an Apple case, I thought the £40 for the Apple 6+ case was a lot. I doubt I’ll like the phone in the MB case either but it’ll then match other items so not sure.

I also got the wireless charging mat today so looking forward to trying that out tonight (wow, that sounded incredibly boring)

I fail to see the point of a charging mat that you have to plug in so you don’t have to plug in your phone. The only benefit I can see from an iPhone perspective is you will now at least be able to charge and have headphones plugged in. Charging mats make much more sense in cars where you can just throw your onto the console and it charges. Next to the bed at home... pointless

No finding the cable in the dark, you can even work it in the furniture, really neat solution.

Why would you do that? Plug your phone in and then turn off the lamp. The only way it would be a neat solution would be if the whole of the top of your bedside unit was a charging mat. I’ve seen units with round coaster type devices drilled into the top and it’s far from neat

Ok so a few car makers are now including wireless charging, but surely this is detrimental to battery longevity with it potentially being on charge all of the time?

Iirc charging isn't bad. Charging to full is what kills a battery.

My phone gets plugged in to my car in the centre console every time I get in as the interface works better plugged in that it does over BT (album art through idrive etc).

The matt stays on the side plugged in, I just put the phone on top... sounds lazy but not having to find the lead (which used to always manage to find its way down the back of my bedside table) and plug it in is just quite nice.

I purchased a Sony wireless charging mat that was less than a 1m Apple lead.

Just to add, last night I ran the phone down to 4%, placed the phone on to the mat at 11pm and it was 100% by about 6am. May of been fully charged sooner, but a lot of people say wireless is very slow, as long as it fully charged over night that’s fine by me!
