But they are materially reducing the advertised specification of an item of goods AFTER they sold it - WITHOUT telling the owner - just before the release of newer handsets.

It stinks and I sincerely hope every government across the world rips Apple a new one over this
In reality, the only thing that would change anything would be the customer base going elsewhere.

This isn't going to happen. I bet Apple fans have already forgotten about this or made up an excuse that they deem acceptable. smile

Wouldn't it be funny if they asked for source code and source code had some if statements which refer to September/March.

I’ve booked in for a battery replacement on Saturday via the website. I certainly will tell them where to go if they ask for £79 when their homepage states that they will do it for £25!!
Good luck with that.
I've had confusion over price on a repair by Apple and their way of dealing with it was to just waive the charge.

Has my iPhone been hobbled?

So a couple of months ago unfortunately I updated to the latest software, quite how I managed it I'm not sure but I woke up and there it was.

Since then my iPhone 6 that must be coming up to 3 years old is terrible, slow, apps crash, even apple approved ones such as Podcasts which I use a lot.

Now occasionally before this, I would get the battery shutting down at 30% or so. So I could conceive that my battery isn't in good condition but a forced shut down once every couple of weeks was no problem to me-especially considering the crap I have to put up with now.

So have I been done by apple? If I have, who should I complain to given the age of the phone?

not read the thread so this may be common knowledge, but even though the discounted battery replacement programme is not officially available yet on the apple/uk website, you can speak to apple support on chat and they will arrange it. As long as you have a ticket number (generated by starting the support chat) you can just use that to book in on the apple store appointment bookings bit of the site. The chat adviser said it might get very difficult to get appointments once this all 'goes public' so I'd get in now before the link appears on the site.

I may have missed it, but has there been any mention of iPad batteries?
If they run the same iOS surely they get old and throttled back in the same fashion?

No mention anywhere. Probably not affected. Battery life should be a lot longer as well, as a lot less people charge their iPad daily.

i'm assuming (if Apple are to be believed) that there is something in iOS that takes action based upon the actual age (or health) of the installed battery, otherwise the battery replacement programme would have no effect. They did however say that they'd be parameterising the slow down... i mean 'battery protection' in an upcoming update so it should be user controlled at that point, regardless of the real reason Apple were doing it.

As noted above my 6 runs the benchmark faster than the ‘standard’ phone so can’t be just age.

Left work with 92% battery with no charging on my iPhone 6 having Changed my battery. Before the battery change my phone would be dead by 10AM.

In fact, before the change I had to leave my phone on charge when I was at my desk. Before going out at night I would have to do a top up charge to 100% to have a chance of getting an Uber home. Even then I couldn’t use the phone for anything otherwise it would be dead in 4 hours.

As another benchmark....... my wife’s 6S is on its original battery and my 6 definitely out performs it in almost every way.

eek
So, since this is a reproduceable issue, is it safe to say that it'll happen to ALL phones in the affected model ranges?

I can’t see how they can try to charge me full whack when it explicitly says on their website that it will cost £25.

It just says details will be provided, nowhere does it say that it only commences from a certain date. Just says that it is in place until December.

If they try and tell me it’s not started yet then I’ll just kick up enough of a fuss that they’ll do it to shut me up smile

It'll happen to anyone that updated iOS to the version that has it and if the phone is 6 or above

I too went based on what it says when booking the appointment on the website of £25, booked in for Tuesday, I can't see how the figure will be any different! And if it keeps my 6 going for another year or so, then great!

The headphone jack is also on the way out which is annoying, but I'd rather buy a pair of B&W PX's than upgrade the phone!

Just rang apple and their analytics said my battery was toast. As we live an hour or so away from an Apple store I requested a mail in repair but unfortunately their mail in service is swamped (wonder why?)!

So they have passed on my case to a manager who is calling back Monday to see how availability is for the postal service then.

If I get the phone repaired for £25 and it lasts another 18 months/couple of years I'd be pretty pleased.

Quite why they went about things in such an underhand manner I have no idea (OK, it was down to money I know!)?
