Any help?

It is a link to an HP tech support that seems to match your problem

Yes that looks promising - thanks.
I've actually already looked on there, but used the term 'shut down' instead of 'restart' of which (the latter) is more accurate.

Thanks for taking the time to post.
One of them was wiped clean and started again from scratch - twice.
I have a sneaky suspicion that it's one of two programs i've loaded up from disc (one is very new on the market), if it isn't that one then it's the other. What I have done is uninstalled it and i'll see if it behaves now. That seems like a good start to me?
I can also contact the producers of it to see if they have had any other reported problems.
That seems sensible.

Has it made any difference?

Not in the slightest laugh

In order to send a laptop back you have to call HP in India first, they try to fix it, if they can't they give you a form which allows you to send it back. The first woman I rang just cleared it off and we went back to factory settings, this didn't work.
So on my next call the guy did what the chap up there ^^ pointed out, we did this:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03413399
"Remove the check mark next to Automatically restart under System Failure, then click OK."

And it's shut down and restarted on its own a further two times since banghead
I'll ring them again, maybe tomorrow.
