Thanks for alll the replies guys - my Internet's been down so couldn't reply sooner - I've decided to let the wife stick with paperbacks, the techie nature of kindle is a big negative for oldies like the wife & I
You're just trying to get out of buying a birthday present. FWIW - when I bought mine (many years ago) I was pretty sure I wouldn't get on with it - I liked reading books. I changed my mind pretty much as soon as I started using it. Not really any negative sides, and it's so easy to carry multiple books on holiday - plus you can get more whenever you want pretty much wherever you are. The sample feature is also dead useful - there are some styles of writing I just don't like and being able to try the first part of the book is very handy.
(My mum was absolutely non-techy and also found the same thing when she bought one)
