Anyone tried the b&o h9i head phones? I know b&o are normally dismissed but I have seen many positive reviews. I am working on the basis that we have already entered “stupidly priced” territory with the Sony’s so it makes little difference if I spend more. I like the look but want to make sure they have the performance to match.
I have a pair of Sony XM2 and also the H9i and much prefer the sound of the B&O, even if the ANC isn’t as effective.

Good to know. There’s a chance I will be spending a lot of time on planes in the near future so will be buying some decent headphones.

It would be worth trying the new XM3 which according to the reviews is much better sounding than the XM2.

I like the codec support of the Sony, superior battery life and the ANC is better, however the B&O just sound better in every way to my ears. I use with iPhone so they are both using AAC.

An alternative to active noise cancelling is a good pair of noise blocking ones. I have used a pair of Shure in-ear phones for nearly 10 years including a ton of long haul travel. No batteries required, and they are low profile enough that you can sleep in them even on a flat bed seat. When combined with some white noise (waves or water sounds) they materially improve the quality of your sleep and overall restedness after a flight. They retail around £100+ but I have found deals here and there for £60 or so.

I'm off to Vancouver later today. They'll go in my ears on takeoff, and be removed when I land. And to answer what may be the first question; yes, I can still hear announcements and the cabin service with the music off.

You should consider IEM's then, either Shure SE535/SE846 or Westone W40/W60. They offer incredible sound and isolation. As they say, once you go in ear you won't go back.

#metoo, I spent a lot of money on different tips, sleeves etc. Custom sleeves are always the best option, but finding an outfit that can do them right can be a challenge. From universal tips Westone makes the best fitting ones, especially their STAR silicone ear tips. I have huge earholes and the biggest one they offer is too big for me. And they fit many different brands, also Shure SE's

Here's a sampler pack that is worth spending money on.

I searched around for a while and decided to buy them when flying on holiday as that was the only place I could find a significant saving. Ended lucking out as they were on sale and got the tax free price in the airport and got them for £249 instead of £329. Not sure I've ever seen these discounted in a black friday type sale either.....

Also what's worth recommending is the ear balm, it makes huge difference to how well they seal.

This is the best one I've tested since it's a gel not liquid like the other ones I'd tested.

I already have Shure in ear headphones. The next purchase is firmly frivolous squared. I bought a new iPhone so decided I need Bluetooth headphones. But, I use headphones mostly on planes so will probably be using my Shure or the supplied ones.

My son wants a set of ear pods for Christmas, is there any cheap copies anyone can recommend? Don’t fancy paying £150 for the Apple ones.

If your son is old enough to look after them then I'd seriously recommend buying the genuine items - they are brilliant.

ok so DACs are not headphone but I thought this might be a good place to ask.

I use a laptop with in a dock when at home and and the only think that is not on the dock is a headphone port i'm lasy this is one more thing to plug in so would people recommend a USB DAC and head phones or blue tooth headphones?

yep first world problems.

A colleague in the office recommends these highly

they get good reviews on Amazon too.
I don't have a pair myself but considering them as an emergency pair.

Depends what headphones you have, but if you want a DAC to achieve good sound (not only to connect headphones to your laptop) this is a good choice (the difference being power output, red one drives power hungry headphones).
