On the max at around £1200 it works out at £1.64 a day over 2 years which I think is great value for a device that is used loads.
The 'only £xp a day is one way of looking at it, and often how people justify these things.

The other way is to say it's many peoples monthly wage, and in some countries an annual wage or more... for a fking phone!!!! smile
You can say the same of anyone buying a tv, or any car other than a Dacia, or literally anything that isn’t the cheapest version of something. Look at watches, they literally all do an identical thing, yet some a hundreds of thousands.

My XS Max 128gb arrives today I only ordered yesterday afternoon, I mainly upgraded it for the camera.
You might want to check that as there is no 128gb version.

Has to be real he bought it from the genuine Orange website smile

I’m torn today. 64 GB or 256GB? The XS should start at 256. Memory costs nothing so for £999 it should have came with the 256.

John Lewis XS / XS Max orders have finally gone live so I've gone for one for collection from Waitrose tomorrow.

They have opened a few store early this morning (Brent Cross and about five others) so presume that means they've got good stock on hand in store.

JL (&P!) also have an offer on a half price Speck Precision Pro XS Max case if bought at the same time.

I saw that Argos have also gone live with them for immediate collection from a few stores and 4pm collection from others.

Apple themselves still dicking about and seemingly only able to offer delivery in 2+ weeks now?! It's almost like they don't want to sell them.

In my mind I think that upgrading every 3 years is about right now, due to the evolutionary rather than revolutionary nature of phones over the last couple of years.
Same , I used to buy every 2 years or so as it used to seem a completely new phone coming out with great new features. Now I’m still on my 7 as the only significant changes since then seem to be a bigger screen and better camera, which aren’t enough to push me to upgrade.

Plus I don’t want to get rid of Touch ID. I use it for paying for most things, including the tube, and don’t think FaceID will be as good.

The September S model is always the same as the previous one, so maybe the next phone will be worth upgrading for, but this is the longest I’ve held on to an iPhone.

I did try a cheap Android when my 5s died and I needed a stop gap until the 8 came out.

It was fine. I didn’t especially get on with Android but it was certainly usable. But I prefer iPhones and am happy to pay the extra.

I got almost 4 years out of my 5s and expect to get the same out of my 8+ so from that point of view they aren’t a bad value proposition at all. (In connection with this ios12 has breathed new life into my old iPad mini and it should last a good while longer now.)

We all spend money on things like cars, tellys that we use for a couple of hours a day max. I don’t see an issue with indulging in a device that is used so frequently as a phone.

I walk past the Edinburgh apple shop on my way to work, I think there was maybe 5-10 people standing outside. Think the days of massive queues/ hype are over

Rising cost/ other companies having stock/ not much profit in reselling these days.
It used to always be Chinese people in the dozens in the queues in Liverpool.

The watch is lovely!

It looks the same but.......different

I've currently got a 3 42mm but the 4 is slightly bigger (we knew that) but seems a lot bigger!

My new phone is currently talking to my 7 and I'm not sure what it's doing hehe

I have a 3. I use it to tell the time, only, because it's too small and I can't read it very well.

I need glasses to read (I can get away without them but have to guess hehe )

The new screen is large enough not to wear my glasses yes

I wanted a new watch, I’m using one of the very originals. I’m just disappointed they didn’t put in an improved battery. Mine lasts all day unless I use the workout app which is very important to me.

My series 3 would last nearly 2 days in normal use and even if i went on say a 5 hour cycle or more it would easily last a full day and my old series 1 which wouldn't even last a day.

The current batteries are light years ahead now yes

Ah yes I kept saying that when ordering it. It’s because my current phone is 128gb it’s a 256gb and arriving in the next few minutes!

Wow! Are you 90 years old? Are you aware of the term 'smartphone' ? It's been around since the very first iPhone. I'll educate you and bring you up to speed, Grandpa. smile

Smartphones are essentially very portable computers - even more portable than laptops, which you've probably heard about, or iPads and similar tablet's - familiar with those?

Anyway, smartphones are not 'just' phones. They are incredible devices that we can use to explore the Internet, manage Business functions, take photographs with, read content such as books and magazines upon, store music and video upon, listen to music and watch video from, engage with others using Social Media platforms - even, as in my case, run an entire Business from!

They are immense in terms of functionality and while some people will only want - or need a phone (you, I assume) - smartphones are so much more and allow people like me to literally work from the beach, on a plane, travelling, walking - anywhere I am, far more portably than my laptop can offer.

Obviously, not all smartphones are made equal and some have premium features and better, nicer displays, are faster, better cameras etc. If you want a flagship version naturally you will pay more. As with anything. You have to weigh the benefit of each feature vs your use and the associated cost difference.

You think it is a lot of money to pay over a £1000 for 'a phone' and I'd agree with you if it was 'just a phone' but it really isn't and the benefits I personally get from owning a smartphone make £1000+ an absolute bargain! I want the premium features because I use the smartphone a lot and as a tool I use everyday, I want the best experience. The amount of freedom from being chained to a desk it provides me is worth far, far more than £1000!

Granted, if you do not take advantage of what a smartphone can do for you, then you would be better off paying less for a bog standard phone or cheaper smartphone. But to be dismissive in the way you are being, is just, well, silly. smile
