I've often wondered if Apple could become an airtime provider? If their devices became locked to their own data provision it would be game, set and match wouldn't it? eSIM technology seems well positioned for this.
How would they establish a network for phone coverage? That’s a massive task.

The carriers hate eSIMs, as they fear it will make switching too easy.
But surely they’re normally protected by their contracts? My deal with 3 mobile is sim only renewed annually.

They would have to piggyback on another provider unless they built their own network so you'd not have the option of an Apple device if you can't get a signal from their provider at your house etc. Now they are on all networks without the hassle of having to provide tech support of the network etc.

I think they initially considered this - the standard industry pricing and kickbacks when the original iPhone went on sale were clearly not something Apple were prepared to countenance.

However, that's in the past and Apple are very much in control of the relationship with networks. Unless they saw an opportunity to radically disrupt the market, I doubt they would want to take on the burden of network maintenance etc. They are an obstinately focused operation - M&As are generally small and supplemental.

Just a heads up iOS 12.1 was released last night which enables the dual sim feature (if your on EE).

More info below but it looks like you need to request a e-sim pack which can either be posted to you(call 150) or you can get one from an EE store. I will pick one up on the weekend.

Excellent thanks for the reminder!

Have phoned EE and code should be with me by the weekend, will update on the progress.
My e-sim has just arrived so the turn around is pretty quick, just waiting for my nano sim to come through from work for the other line so hopefully should be able to set it up soon.

Apple could buy several major carriers.

They’d need to establish nearly worldwide coverage to make that feasible. Not impossible but very unlikely imo.

It's not a subject or industry I know anything about.... but as I mentioned, I was interested in the potential strategies behind eSim technology.

If, for example, they acquired EE, I assume they would enjoy the reciprocal operating (roaming) relationships with other airtime providers that EE currently have.

Given how heavily Apple curate their customer experiences (music, photos etc) I could see eSIM being a way to control their market even further. You want an iPhone? You have to sign up....

Apple are led by Tim Cook, a numbers guy. Investing the huge sums of money in buying carriers in even their top 5 markets would only make sense to him if the returns and growth offered lived up to Apple. Would this result in 35%+ margin? Large growth opportunities? I don't see it so it's a no go

The roaming agreements all have change of control termination clauses. Acquisition of a carrier by Apple would trigger these. It would require a lot of negotiation, because so many of the other carriers would feel threatened. Then again, if Apple moves, so will Google.

I’m with 3 Mobile at the moment of a sim only deal. I chose 3 because I can use them in several countries outside of Europe for no additional cost. I’d really like to be able to use EE but the roaming charges make it prohibitive for me to change.

I’m going to change my iPad for the new pro version.

A word of warning. I bought the current one about 3 years ago and chose WiFi only. I then found that it wouldn’t work for navigation apps like Navmii without the cellular capability.

Such as?

That looks like a meaningless post without an explanation.

I'm guessing he's referring to you posting the same thing twice.

Ah yes, I haden’t noticed. Nothing wrong with the iPad but I’m on a cruise ship so the WiFi isn’t great.

I have set mine up now, ee personal esim and o2 work physical sim.

I’ve downloaded the outlook app for email and calender, I can just turn the notifications off when I don’t want to be bothered by work.

It would be really nice if you could schedule the second line to be off after a set time or day, maybe that will come in the future.
