Google maps on CarPlay
Discussion
Well, it’s a bit basic isn’t it.
It’s missing lots of features from the iPhone app.
I really miss ‘Search along route’ and the fact you have to push the microphone button to activate it being able to hear your voice.
I think it also has an issue with the zoom function.
I’m sure it will get better as it develops.
Roll on Waze. They seem to be taking longer with their Beta so hopefully it will be more fully featured.

Apple Maps is far better.
- correctly coloured roads
- speed limits displayed
- predictive journey suggestions
- "ETA only" mode. Hugely useful for the usual commute where you don't want directions, but do want traffic on your route displayed.
- better cleaner layout

I personally also prefer the Google routing algorithm over Apple. - correctly coloured roads

I tried it out this morning and agree it's very basic. I'm presuming they just rushed to get the basics working well for day one and will add further features. But, I think I saw somewhere that there are some restrictions imposed by Apply in terms of layout etc which may make some things more difficult to implement.
As for Apple Maps, I try it every now and then but usually don’t get on with it as I find the spoken instruction to come later than I would like, or at least later than I’m used to from Google / Waze.
The other thing that annoys with me the way CarPlay in general works is that you don’t seem to be able to have a different app displayed on the phone. I’d like to have Google Maps running on CarPlay just highlighting upcoming congestion (via the orange / red markings), with Waze displayed on the phone screen given directions, speed and warnings. (Or vice versa once Waze comes to CarPlay).
Seems the only way of doing that is still to use two phones.

There's a potentially useful tip in here for using the new shortcuts function to use Siri with Google Maps - I haven't tried it though, yet, so no idea if it actually is helpful or not...

Really? All I can see is approved Beta testers and android Auto for Waze.
You have Waze running in Apple CarPlay and you’re not a Beta tester?
Sorry didn't know CarPlay was Apple. Just checked and mine in Android Auto. Either way, waze works perfectly. You can only type in address when stationary (Understandably) but the voice control was been faultless when driving. Spotify integration also overlays with Waze and works wonders. You have Waze running in Apple CarPlay and you’re not a Beta tester?
Obviously the technology is there, I wonder why Apple don't have it yet?
Waze is really good, but the adverts annoy me. You see something appear on the map, you think it's something to do with the route or the traffic or whatever, but it's just taken 5 seconds of your concentration to tell you that Joe's Burgers are just off the next junction. And you're not hungry.

The adverts don't appear on Android Auto. Only when running Waze on the phone they pop up. I tried google maps the other day, was instantly disappointed with the look and feel. I do however like the way you can speak to it and navigate to most places, but apart from that not great and the visuals not that great! Also if you have an Audi, you cannot get the map on the virtual cockpit, like with the Apple maps, it just comes up with a compass, so a missed opportunity...
