I see from teardowns that are starting to appear, that the memory and SSD storage in the new Macbook Air are both collections of chips soldered directly to the logic board, the same board that has the processor and the T2 chip and pretty much all the rest of the electronics.

Which is a bit annoying, because upgrading the SSD was a pretty simple process in the old ones since it just plugged in to a connector, the new ones are completely non-upgradeable.
And if you take you MacBook to an Apple store you'll get fleeced for "repairs".
I generally hear more good things than bad about Apple customer service - Inc foc repairs etc.
It was much better than it is now...

Don't get me wrong, the people are fine. But as the post you responded to notes, if anything goes wrong with one of the later machines, and they aren't inclined to repair FOC, you may as well just buy another machine. Which is poor compared to the old ones.

(The new ones also do not seem as robust in the first place IMO...the slide started with rubbish capacitors on iMacs a while ago smile).
My pro 2, 12.9 which is 16 months old, has a tiny bright spot on the screen. It’s out of warranty. The fault is very small and at the outer bottom edge. I’m pondering a crack at a warranty claim.

16<24, Apple don't operate outside of the law here.

Went to an Apple store yesterday and was very underwhelmed by the new MacBook Air, It hardly feels much smaller/thinner than the MacBook Pro. I primarily went to see the fingerprint ability but I am sure this is similar to the MacBook Pro with Touchbar? Anyone able to confirm?

It's most likely an identical sensor, it looks and feels the same at least.

I think it's a price thing. It's that little bit lighter, but most importantly a bit cheaper than the (non-touchbar) MacBook Pro, and therein lies it's appeal.

Plus, if TouchID is a dealbreaker, then it's something like £600 cheaper than the Pro.

I was the same, that’s why I’m thinking Pro. I need to take the wife with me to get one, she’s a teacher so she’ll get 10% off.

£600 cheaper than the Pro is considerable. I have just upgraded my iCloud to 200gb per month so the HDD size of the Air/Pro is not so much of an issue any more (albeit I still prefer having my work backed up on an external SSD). I have a Pro without the Touchbar at the moment and it does the job perfectly. The new Air is not slim enough or different enough to warrant me changing tbh.

600? Cheapest 13 inch non-touch bar Pro is 1249 that's 50 quid more than the cheapest Air.

Bought an 11 inch iPad Pro to replace an old iPad mini 2 yesterday. Early signs are it’s bloody great. I got the pencil as well, the intention being to go paperless for meeting notes etc - I tried this with the mini and a normal stylus and it was useless. The pencil so far is incredible.

One thing I would say is that 75 quid for a bloody cover is utterly ridiculous though!
And it doesn’t cover the corners. Mine’s now in a drawer, replaced by a £10 Amazon version that will protect the iPad a bit if I drop it.

The iPad itself is great, although I’m struggling a bit with face recognition: I use mine landscape, and my thumb covers up the camera when I’m holding it. I guess I’ll get used to it.
Yes, I’m having the same problem with obscuring the camera, bit annoying, but I’ll live with it as you say!

anyone know how to switch to onscreen keyboard when the manual keyboard is in use (for example, to access voice rec)

my old pro had the logitech keyboard with a "soft keyboard" button to do this????

At the bottom there should be a bar with auto suggestions, undo, paste etc... at the right hand side is a down arrow - hold down on this and the keyboard should appear.

Went to currys earlier and had a look at the new iPad Pro. Software all very much the same but did like the way it felt in hand.
Also liked the new iPhone XS MAX or whatever it’s called. Feels nice and premium over my 8+!

A very thin & lightweight device made of glass & aluminium, with a large surface area bends easily.

No st Sherlock.

Nobody says it shouldn't bend when too much force is applied to it. But this guy folds like a piece of paper - you can clearly see the weak spots in the case that cause it, indicating typical Apple design language. Stay tuned for the magical iPad 2019 edyshon with revolutionary alloys of "rocket grade aluminum" which will be the first ever to be used in a Pro consumer product. And it even comes in piss yellow gold. You can pre-order yours now for just 1499 for the 16GB Wifi only edyschon (this material is used in rockets so obviously it can't be cheap FFS!).

Seriously, are you incapable of making a point without littering your post with hyperbole?

As for bendability, I'd be surprised if I couldn't do the same with any other tablet.
