Hi all,

I’m looking for a simple one-box solution to handle routing and fibre connection to Plusnet to replace the BT fibre modem and ASUS router I currently have.

Wi-fi is handles by BT whole home, so I don’t need Wi-fi capability on the router - I’m trying to tidy up the room and reduce the number of devices and cables. Any suggestions?

Thanks much
Simon

Ask Plusnet to send you a new router

I use a Plusnet Hub one with wireless switched off. Works perfect.

The NetGear DM200 runs ADSL/VDSL (FTTC - don't know about FTTP) on PlusNet, has but one ethernet socket and no wifi. Functions as a modem/router/firewall, or modem only if the BT stuff can handle PPOe logins.

It will run in modem-only mode if you want to use another firewall/router with PPPOe logins. £33.

Downsides are if you have any line problems, PlusNet will ask for the original modem to be plugged back in.

Thanks all.

I’m trying to reduce the amount of boxes, ie find a combined router & fibre modem.

I don’t have a plusnet device as I was originally on BT infinity and didn’t take equipment when I moved to plusnet. Maybe a plusnet modem router hub thing is the best answer?

If you haven't got too many devices then getting the plusnet one will be cheap/free and also very simple - just unpack and connect. If you want something better then a Draytek 2762 (the non-wireless version) would be my choice at around £100

My plusnet broadband failed on Friday and an Openreach engineer came out this morning (turns out another engineer numpty had disconnected by fibre in the cabinet when connecting someone else up on Friday) and I asked about the openreahc modem replacement (I have ubiquiti kit and I like the idea of ditching the openreach modem) - apparently the plusnet modem/router combo unit is a rebranded BT homehub with a different colour LED (as BT owns plusnet). Therefore getting the freebie hub sounds like an easy solution for you.

If you dont' go down that route I can wholeheartedly recommend an Archer VR900 (TP Link). It does have wifi, but you can of course disable it.

Hi, that still needs a separate fibre modem though. I’m after a router with one built-in. Thanks anyway though smile

The FritzBox 3490 is good (sent out free with Zen) although the wireless isn't very strong.

(Helpfully, I replaced it with a Draytek 130 modem and an Asus Router)

Thanks, I’ll have a look. I don’t need the wireless function, I have a 4 head BT mesh setup it’s excellent

No it doesn't.

Are you talking fibre to the premises ? Or the usual FTTC ?

The Archer has a built in fibre modem. Trust me . I'm using it :-)

"Versatile Connectivity – Ethernet WAN and USB ports, the VR900 is fully compatible with VDSL2/ADSL2+/ADSL2/ADSL standard, fibre/cable access and 3G/4G USB dongles"

VDSl2 is your fibre for normal FTTC

Apologies, I misread that ..

'TP-LINK Archer VR900 can also be used with any fibre broadband or cable modem with an Ethernet output'

I missed the word 'also'.

I'll have a better read now!

It's all a bit confusing.

I didn't reasearch for days, but I did enough research. I wanted good (excellent) wifi , a good web interface with good firewall and network controls (which it is superb for), a brand I trust - which I do with TP Link, and all around £100. The wifi part will obviously be wasted on your needs.

If you don't use advanced features like the firewall and static routing then you will get away with the cheapest fibre router out there (I think they pretty much all come with wifi like it or not :-) ) saying that.... a quick google of VDSL2 model got this for £32

My daughter and I both have Plusnet Hub One routers, with wireless turned on. No problems with either. Well worth the price paid.

When I switched to PlusNet FFFC, I had two boxes;

a) BTOpenreach Modem that BT comes and screws on the wall.

b) PlusNet Wireless router

Phone cable from the phone faceplate to the Modem. Then ethernet cable from the modem to the router.

Now I just have one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06WD4RVL4

So it's phone line to the TP-Link router/modem and that's it.

Is that the set up you are after ? i.e. just one box that does the modem, router and wireless all in one ?

The reason I did this as because the PlusNet router would hang up to several times a day and I had to power cycle it to get it to start working again. With my new set up I've never touched it since the day it arrived - over 10 months now.
