JerryRigEverything has put a durability test of the Samsung Fold.

I wouldn’t want to be an early adopter or this technology, especially for the price of the product.

The observation at the end is interesting though, a screen protector and better hinge protection and he thinks the format would take off.

I'm glad this exists. I'm also glad I won't be a beta tester for it.

As soon as something tougher, slimmer and bigger when unfolded pops up I'll be first in line.

The rereleased Samsung Fold is showing up now, just be very very careful with it...

Also a new Xiaomi phone. This one doesn't fold, but it does wrap the screen around the front and back of the body...

biggrin thanks for posting. What a waste of time this phone is. Is that a budge in your pocket or are you happy.....

Looks like it’s made of cheese, no thanks. The idea is good though and no doubt someone will make it work. I like this guy’s videos, thanks for the link. What he does to these expensive phones with a Stanley knife makes me wince hehe

Don’t get me on his use of the Stanley, it makes my teeth itch when he starts scratching the edges.

But his videos are very good, he also does tear downs too which are very useful if you want to repair your phone yourself.

Here is his first foldable phone durability test, the Royole Flexpai.

And tear down afterwards.

A couple of phones to get things up to date.

Motorola RAZR.
https://www.t3.com/feature/motorola-razr-release-d...

Same design as the original RAZR V3, and they have made a lower spec phone to fit the RAZR case. Plastic screen, smaller battery, mid range processor. $1500.

Samsung have launched the Galaxy Z Flip
https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/11/21132345/samsun...

Better spec, folding glass screen with software for the screen being set at an angle like a laptop, rather than just fully open or closed, and it has wireless charging. $1380.

I think the RAZR is the better looking/designed phone. The Samsung is too thick. No thanks. £1,500. I'm sceptical about its durability too. After 12 months they'll tell you to swing when that screen fails or leaves a permanent burn mark along the fold which I think it will

Still caveats about screen durability in the review here. You get a one time discounted screen repair and then it's full fat.

Can permanently mark it with a fingernail (if you try hard enough). I like it but can’t say I’m that fussed about a folding screen. His follow up tear down video of the phone shows some quite nifty engineering in the hinge.

I really fancy one of those, and I'm not too worried by the damage he managed to cause - I tend to look after my phones - I'm more concerned by the long term damage from just using it as a phone, i.e. the fold on the screen and the hinge.

I think I'll hold off for 6 months to see what more careless and destructive people find out about it wink

Scratches REALLY get on my nerves and this looks much more scratch prone than a conventional screen plus with no way to protect it either.

I'm only interested in something that goes from phone to tablet size myself but this is a step towards more development at least.

Samsung have got to the 2nd generation Galaxy Fold and Z Flip phones. The flip adds 5G, the fold has a bigger outer screen and gets rid of the camera bezel on one side.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Surface Duo is incoming, with 2 screens instead of a single folding screen. Dave Lee has got an engineering sample and has a video on the physical format of it

It's a phone... that won't fit in my trouser pocket!

I normally put my phone next to my wallet in my front pocket, hand in pocket for extra security in town.

Marques Brownlee first look at the Galaxy Fold 2. It looks like they fixed some of the problems with the original Fold.

Asus Zenbook folding screen laptop. 17" touchscreen PC tablet folds down to a 12" ish (but it's thick) laptop with a Bluetooth keyboard.

I think it's a few versions away from being an everyday computer. The first Samsung Fold phones had their issues, but I think the Fold 3 sorts most of them and the Fold 4 should hopefully be pretty good. The fold crease when this Asus flat is still an issue though.
