Samsung s7 still decent?
Discussion
Got a 2.5 year old S7, battery died so grabbed a S9 on the cheap in run up to black Friday. Got a replacement battery for the S7 at the same time, did intend to sell it, but now decided to keep it!!
I now use the S9 when at work/out and about, but the lack of a physical home button, no finger print unlock on the front, and catching the edge display with my palm means when at home I still perfer to use my S7!!!...In fact using it now.
Wife had a play with the S9 and also still perfers her S7, simply because of the unlock button at the front of the phone.
S10 which built finger print sensor built in display is baddly needed.
In short the S7 is a fab phone even today. Am still getting regular security updates - about once a month. S9 has a great camera but otherwise S7 is just as good.
S10 looks likes a game changer but likely to have a price tag of £999, so I cannot see our S7s been replaced for another 12-18 months, though selling the S9 will help fund the change. My S7 would be nearly 4 yeard old by than, some people don't even keep cars that long, Samsung nailed it with the S7, if forced to have only one phone I would sell the S9, pocket the change and keep the S7 .

Oh the ignorance, it's a blisssssss isn't it.
So what do you suggest? Even with a brand new Samsung, android updates take ages to get rolled out, and surely any critical security issue would have to be patched for all phones?
Happy with my s7. Its the first phone I've kept after my contract expired as it still works fine and does everything I need. I cannot think of anything more modern phones can do that mine cannot.
Had the battery replaced but no big deal, its to be expected after so much use.
Didn't bother with s9 for reasons above, home button etc.
Might go for an s10 if it suits but I'll have to play with it first.

PS I'm still waiting to get from you what you demanded from me, i.e. back up your claims with scientific data.
I'm not sure your analogy with seat belts is 100% sensible! I aren't going to die if someone hacks my phone am I? Whilst it'd be a pain, it won't cost me my life, or in fact injure me at all.
Just checked my s7e and the date of the last update/security patch thingy is 22/11/18. What's wrong with that? (serious question, happy to be educated)

Nothing is wrong with getting updates. The point was that because of the age of this phone, buying one now makes no sense even if it's half the price or less - the updates will soon stop and you're opening yourself to a world of vulnerabilities, of course you most likely won't die from them... obviously (I didn't expect anyone to take that analogy literally but then again this is PH and I should have considered it)Just checked my s7e and the date of the last update/security patch thingy is 22/11/18. My S7 is still working perfectly after 18months. No slowdown, battery is great.
The amount of iphone users that come into my office asking for an iphone charger is comical.
Iphones really are terrible, a case of style over substance.
As a long term android user and now an iPhone Xs owner, I have to disagree with what you said. That also includes battery life. The amount of iphone users that come into my office asking for an iphone charger is comical.

I loved my S7 and only upgraded because I could (and after 2 years I just wanted something new and shiny) - I got the Huawei P20 Pro which I love and I'm just waiting for the Android 9 update to help it along.
I thought the camera on the S7 was good, but the P20's is unbelievable
Yeah but yours is infiltrated by the Chinese who are monitoring your activity in an attempt to undermine UK national security I thought the camera on the S7 was good, but the P20's is unbelievable

What a coincidence, I've just bought a Galaxy S7 Edge last month and regret nothing (I downgraded from an S8).
- BEWARE OF FAKES. There are a tonne of fake Samsung phones on ebay/facebook and some look near enough identical. Fake Samsung's cannot have Knox installed as it's dependent on very specific hardware, so the S Health app does not function. Test this works before buying. Other signs are that the sim tray does not fit flush with the phone once inserted as there should be no visible gap between the sim card slot and the phone.
- The camera in the S7 and the S8 are identical on a hardware/software level and both produce fantastic quality shots. The S7 feels better to hold however and I recommend getting the Spigen Thin Case to protect the rear.
- The screen burn issues can be easily fixed by going in to the Samsung diagnostics mode and refreshing the screen multiple times until the pixels clear (or just get an app that does it for you). I will say the screen burn is not something I have ever experienced on any of my Samsungs (S5, S6, S7 and S8), and I have 'always on display' activated 24/7.
- The S7 edge has a bigger battery than the S7 (3500 compared to 3000 IIRC). Other than that (and the curved edges) they are identical.
- You will struggle to get a good screen protector for the S7 Edge as they do not make tempered glass in that shape - even though you can find 100s of them on eBay. These are in reality, just hard plastic which will not adhere to the edges no matter how hard you try. If you want a screen protector, you will have to find a film-type version which are not as common as they once were.
- The always on display on both models uses around 0.6% battery an hour and is a feature I cannot live without. Samsung's have an OLED screen meaning each individual pixel has it's own light, so only the time display is active while the rest of the screen is off.
- The S8 had the issue of the oleophobic coating wearing off prematurely (stops smudges/fingerprints adhering to screen) and I had this myself where my jeans would rub on the screen causing an ugly graze on the glass. Not what you expect from a £500+ phone. Haven't had any such issue on the S7
- You will either get a Dual Sim S7, or an S7 with a Micro SD port. They are both housed in the exact same spot so it's either one or the other. The UK phones had Micro-SD slots while some European counterparts had the dual sim instead.

With a bit of bodgery you can get both SIM cards and the microSD working simultaneously. Later models s8,s9 appear to have had this disabled in software even if you can sort the physical issues out but so far my S7 Edge Duos runs happily with my personal and work SIMs and a 200GB card.
