A little more expensive but a much better gaming cpu and storage (though you'll need a wifi card if planning on using wireless)

I would definitely recommend building one if you have any desire to do so--you will end up with a much better machine!
Disagree. OP, spec up a custom build at somewhere like PCSpecialist and I’ll bet it’s less than 50 quid more than building yourself with the same parts - they are bulk-buying components at a discount. For that it will be a very tidy build internally, fully tested, come with a warranty and be guaranteed to perform out of the box. And you’ll only have to wait in for one delivery.

I build my own gaming machines because I can, but I would never claim to end up with a much better machine for a given spend
Yep double agree. I just speced two i7 9700K with 3070 16GB for my two sons. Bought all th estuff from aria/scan/ebuyer/overclockers, was sitting waiting for the 3070 to be available. Then my wife looked around and found the aria range of prebuilt PC's done by an offshoot company for just about the same as I was knocking myself out to build them.

So putting your own computer together is fun but I pretty much guarantee you won't undercut some of the cheaper suppliers.
The only use I found in being able to build them myself is to know exactly what I want in them.

People still doing Intel? hehe

Linus just did a video on the big suppliers, and a couple of them undercut what you could build yourself. There's often a "catch" though with them selling old new stock, but that doesn't change the fact you can get an as good or better machine than what you'd build yourself.

I've done the AMD thing in both processors and graphics cards. It'll take a while before I go back again. I like overclocking intel. I hate overclocking AMD.
On the subject of buying bits from suppliers, one word of advice.
I tend to buy processors only from companies who don't make a ranged of 'overclocked' machines. smile.

I’m in the market for a gaming PC, I did want to use an Xbox but not too happy with the graphics so far.

Are either of these options a good deal?

For gaming the 3600 chip is as good as the 3700X - given the rest of the spec looks similar save the cash and put it towards a 3000 series GPU when they are available.
