Half an hour ago I was (quietly) looking at shiny new cricket bats on the Gray Nicholls site. I use Safari on an iPad.

My wife now asks me why her Facebook (also viewed using Safari on her iPad) is showing her ads for Gray Nicholls cricket bats....

Trivial, but how/why is this happening? I don’t want her ads full of whatever toys I might be browsing. How do I stop this? We are both browsing using the same home network. I must have either:

1. Agreed somewhere buried in t&c’s to share details of my browsing history.
2. Missed a security/privacy setting somewhere
3. Something else entirely...?

Thanks in advance..!

Cookies and Session Data on your iPad... Is she logged into her FB on your iPad?

Use Private Browsing / Incognito Mode to keep everything in its own Box

She’s using her own iPad. How would cookies on my iPad be visible to whatever is choosing the ads that she sees on Facebook? I don’t even use Facebook..!

I don’t want to have to open “private” browsing windows. I would like all my browsing to be private..!

Surely this is possible without having to contort my browser and/or browsing?

Adblock plus and FBPurity will clean up her FB pages.

This caused a tricky moment last year when she asked me why she had ads inviting her to “click here to meet Woking women over the age of 40”.

This after I had completed the online joining forms to sign my 9yo up to play football for Woking Cougars.

Actually quite annoying.

Separate Apple ID’s. No shared ID’s for any apps.

We never use each other’s devices.

I suspect so.

But I don’t know how to change this.

There's a huge thread on this topic. I'm surprised you've not seen it!

Ding.

If you’re not paying for a service, you’re probably the product to be sold.

Ok/thanks.

Is there anything I can do about this? My internet access is via a leased line.

Presumably a household using one router all share one external IP address. Does/can this be changed every (say) 24 hours? Any other ideas?

If I go browsing on Louis Vuitton for a birthday present for my wife, I don’t want her FB to be full of Louis Vuitton ads....

Surely there’s a simple way to stop this?

I have never posted anything on Facebook!

I used google search (I don’t sign in to this either) to look for Gray Nicholls bats. Half an hour later my wife’s Facebook whatever is full of Gray Nicholls ads...

I want this to stop!

DuckDuckGo could be an answer. Or put adblockers on all devices.

VPN on each device (can be same subscription), select different countries / locations / servers on each device = different IPs and different locations reported to Google / FB / whoever, provided location services off in Settings.

Friend and I were sat out in Cyprus one day on the beach discussing the local Keo beer. Strangely enough 10 minutes later adverts for keo beer. Does make you wonder. What is the phone doing with that microphone when your not using it.

It’s a bit conspiracy theory but I do wonder if sometimes the phone is just listening so it can feed you adverts. I know it was probably a coincidence and using gps they would know my location and knowing everything else about me they probably can come up with a reasonable suggestion of what adverts to push but it did have us both thinking.

As stated previously use private browsing or incognito mode. All these websites now asking you about cookies I always decline everything as well.

You're not actually declining anything though. It isn't a choice. It's a legally required label telling you that they use cookies to track you. The OK button is your acceptance of them. On the few sites that have an accept/decline option, if you decline then you are booted out of the site and aren't able to read the content. Try disabling cookies in your browser settings and see how far you get trying to use the internet! hehe

I use NordVPN, it gives me the option to be from wherever in the world I want Got it for 75% off as part of a promotion. There are probably free ones available, I would think?
