I currently have a Huawei B818 with a Three unlimited data SIM (about £23 a month up from £16 when I started 3 years ago. Data speeds are OK but not brilliant, varies between 8 and 20 meg. I’ve just discovered there’s an O2 mast about a half mile down the road and according to their signal checker the signal should be good internally an externally. Thing is I’m tempted to change but want to make sure the data rates are better than Three before jumping, Is there any way of doing this other than buying a short term payg SIM to check it out? I also note that in the O2 t&c that there is a fair use policy for the unlimited data sim that says that there is a limit of 650g twice in a six month period whatever that means, I’m currently using about 150g every 30 day period according to the B818 stats.

You need a sim of some sort to try. I bunged my EE sim in mine once but saw no gains, the Ee mast is further away than the 3 mast to my house.

But in theory a £5 sim from whatever mvno uses o2 will test the signal, then go from there

Cheers, that's what I thought. Going with O2 bumps the monthlies up to £34 so that's another consideration I guess.

I know on regular tariffs (non home internet replacement) the data tariffs are decidedly small compared to everyone else, which is annoying as they tend to be hands down the best provider, is this also the case for home internet 4g tariffs ?

The whole data cap thing was the main reason I just stuck with 3, it is genuinely unlimited. I have taken the utter piss and not heard a bean, never noticed it throttle and haven't had a naughty letter from the ISP as I may have done in the past, presumably because it's basically an 07xxx number with all the rest. (makes it a pain getting hold of 3 via anything other than live chat because 'call 333 from your 3 device', umm...

It's not going to last forever though, so one day it'll be like wading through the uswitch landline broadband pages, which start at £6 a month for 150mb a month or similar, but as soon as you click unlimited the prices go silly high.

Been using the Huawei 5G tower with Smarty (a Three MVNO) for a few weeks. Sitting behind the TV, it hovers around 50-60Mbps, on a 4G connection.

I moved it to the kitchen, where my phone gets a 5G signal, just for a test. 401Mbps. That's not a typo, four hundred and one. When I get round to it, I'll move it, my router and the master mesh WiFi node into there permanently.

£15 a month and no contract. Not sure what it will be like when a few more are on it, but surely it will render fibre redundant.

400mb, bloody hell! I'd be re-modelling the kitchen so it has a permanent plinth! Wow

I went for a walk with the kids yesterday to the woods and on the way back we diverted and I stood under the mast and got the line of sight to my house. I say line of sight, the estate rises up over a hill and I'm i'm in a dip, so I'll never get an antenna above that sadly, but I am wondering if a directional aerial on the outside of the house pointing exactly in that direction would help?

Wonder how those rate will fall once everyone is on 5G rather than 4G for their phones. It might seem great now but there's relatively few devices running it.

I've got a 5G phone, and 5G SIM, but no 5G signal...so have to make do with 4G speeds (only for the phone though) frown

I see 3 are offering unlimited data over 24 months and a free 32” LG TV for £23 per month.

I gave them a call after my 24 month contract ended and got a new 24 month unlimited data plan for £15 per month.

Did you threaten cancellation to get the £15PCM offer? (and did you get the TV too?!)

I am tempted to try out Three 4G internet when we move into the new place, even though we have plenty of fibre options.

I did threaten to leave and even went to the trouble of requesting a Service Termination Authorisation Code.

I asked for a TV (not that I needed one) and was offered £15 per month instead.

I have just ditched Three

Connection speeds under 2mbps despite them reassuring me that I would get 60+ and that they are just doing some workon the masts for 10 days.

I gave them 3 months to fix it they didnt. Same router same location with and EE sim showing 70mbps and with a Vodaphone sim 50-60mbps.

Had to have a 60 minute argument to stop them from charging cancellation fees. Spoke to 5 different people, had to give details of the stats from the router 3 times.

Are the routers provided by Three unlocked so they can be used with any network?

Also, if I go SIM only, are TP Link routers any good if I’m happy with 4G over 5G?
