This morning I suddenly realised that the symbol under the "Disconnected" status and "Connection Settings" link is not just a graphic, but is a button.

Click on it and the light on the router goes blue and connectivity is restored.
I guess I must have clicked it by accident yesterday while going for the "Connection Settings" link.

To say that I felt a bit of a censored is an understatement and a I post here as a warning to others.
I suppose I might have to read the manual now.
Welcome to the club mate.

That antenna is omni directional. I have a directional antenna as I have line of sight to the mast. If you don't have line of sight then the omni might be best.

I have trees and houses blocking my view to the mast

So do I.... But it worked wonders - it did take a couple of hours getting the antenna bang on - but worth it.

I bought the omni directional one and I get worse speeds with it, than without it. Think I'll send it back and try the other one.
I can't quite get the location of the router spot on. If I have the small external antenna plugged in, I get great upload speed, but the download suffers. Take them off and the upload speed jumps up and the download speed suffers.

Well another 4g broadband convert here, after reading some posts. Usual story - just moved somewhere rural where traditional bb is 1-3meg. Have gone with EE's official product and so far so good, although I need to get my hands on an antenna as my property is in a valley - plus I need to the landlord's permission to mount an external antenna however he's been pretty sound about other things so fingers cross.

Currently at my dad's in a similar rural area and trying out the router; his traditional bb sees 6meg max; we're currently getting 70meg with this new thing even without an antenna. Safe to say he's now online shopping for one!

I currently get around 15mb up and down on EE 4G, which is much better than 1mb on BT. I’ve got the router in the window which gives the best results.
It is useable, however for big downloads a bit more speed would be handy.
The problem is that all of our windows face east, and the nearest mast is directly west. Which would be the best aerial to try?

External antenna that points west?

Look above at last few pages for external antenna.

Definitely the obvious choice, sorry I should have added that that option isn’t easy due to how the house is laid out. I can’t really drill through the walls or fix stuff to them easily because the land lord has only just had new cladding fitted

You could try in the loft.
As long as you haven't got a metal clad roof smile

And on 3G:

And for comparison 4G on EE:

It's been dire all week but not this bad.

3 might be one of the worst. On my commute I can have full bars and no internet for miles so this doesn't surprise me.

From my experience Three seems a bit erratic. Both geographically and even within the same location. It’ll be singing along one moment and then have the stats like the ones above.

EE is by far the best from a consistency perspective but are much much more expensive.

I have Three at home In my old house as it isn’t sold yet and I don’t want to pay for FTTC and a
SIM cars for an iPad

I read somewhere that the problem with 3 is the frequency(ies) they use. They are different to the other networks and don't penetrate through stuff too well so you're okay if you've got an unobstructed view to a mast but as soon as something (trees/buildings/birds/planes) get in the way your signal goes to nothing.

Is it possible to use range extenders for 4g b/b? i.e. like the plug-in ones you can use for traditional bb. The thick walls in my place mean the signal to some of devices is marginal.

Sorry if it's mentioned elsewhere in the thread but I couldn't see anything.
