Huawei B818 - where is the best place to buy this from?
.
Just got one from Amazon for £185 yesterday. It has doubled the speed I got from the B535 it has replaced,.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08FF37HWM/ref...
Can now get 20meg on three - the cell tower is over 5 miles away,
Whilst not lightning fast, it is fine for streaming UHD Netflix so I'm happy,
I also have a teltonika rutt955 which has a giffgaff sim in - that can sometimes get over 50meg. It has load balancing feature so I have both giffgaff and three services live at the same time.
Now very happy

What do you put the speed increase down to, Quality of the internal antenna, WiFi or something else? I ask because I have the B535 as my main (only) internet connection after dumping the slow and unreliable FTTC. Went from 26/2 with daily outages to averaging 40/30 peaking at 90/40 with zero downtime with the B535 on EE. I don’t use the built in WiFi though as its wired to UniFi USG. Speed and stability has been a revolution- working from home, zoom calls etc. Debating upgrading if it’s worth it.page3 said:

Must be this, as I don't use the built in wifi either. I was getting <10 Meg now getting routinely over 30 - pealing at 60 Meg in the early morningIf your current connection is fast enough for what you need to do then probably not worth the upgrade - law of diminishing returns and all that.
Might be worth holding on until 5G is in your area and get one of these:

My ADSL2+ speeds have been dropping of late (was up around 12-14mbps, now refusing to go beyond 6.7mbps. No more than 1mbps upload). Quick checks with my EE equipped phone and it can get nearly 50mbps (5mbps upload). Even in my kit cupboard it seems to get 25mbps/3mbps. So am thinking once more of plumping for mobile broadband.
A couple of quick numpty questions on the Huawei routers (and 4g routers generally)...
- Presumably the LAN port can be connected to a switch to let anything on the switch connect to the internet?
- If so, how does the "64 connected devices" limit work? Presumably it logs MAC addresses/IP addresses and won't let more than 64 devices at once connect out?
- I've read on EEs site that connection speeds drop the more devices are connected to it. Is this simply the usual sharing of bandwidth conundrum you get with standard broadband etc?
- Can the device also be set up as a DHCP server?

Are you still looking for one? I might know a friend with one (1 month old) available...
Does your friend still have this? I may be interested (subject to answers to the above ).Murph7355 said:

Don't know , but I'd guess probably - are you likely to have more than 64 devices??Murph7355 said:

Probably - at a guessMurph7355 said:

Yup, the 4G modem will give out IP addresses with no issue.Murph7355 said:

I've just asked him and yes he does. He used a 'SMARTY' SIM (on the Three network) but knows that the device is unlocked to all networks
YHM.(On the "64 devices" thing...I've just asked myself that same question Probably not...though with things like 'net connected doorbells I may not be a million miles off).

In my setup the 64 limit is simultaneous WiFi connections. If you have a mic of wired devices (as I do through switches etc) then the limit is not a practical issue. (Yet)FunkyGibbon said:

Just turn off the wifi and connect via a cable to your own router/access points. We have >150 devices and that’s a family of three! Works fine with EE. Infinitely superior to FTTC that was simply crap.Do read up on CGNAT if you have any requirement for access to services or remote access. I use the VPN service from AAISP to give a fixed IP and circumvent this. You may not need to.

I'll give it a go later and report back
Hmm - don't seem to have a RJ11 -RJ11 cable. By the power of Amazon I will have tomorrow. Will report back then, as this could solve a problem for us.S6PNJ said:
Thanks - as to cables - don't you have about 13 old ADSL router boxes lying around with various dongles and cables in them? No, just me then....
Yes I do, but not a single RJ11-RJ11 - every other cable known to mankind (any one need an original iPod cable?) - but not the one I need.FunkyGibbon said:

Any Huawei B818 users managed to get the RJ11 socket and a DECT home telephone working through it via the SIM?
I'll give it a go later and report backApologies for the delay. I can confirm that my DECT phone works just fine through the RJ11 socket
