Got a Huawei Android phone?
Discussion
O2 recycle are now paying £275 for Mate 20 Pros!
Other sites have had around £80 knocked off the used value of the Mate 20 Pro.... absolutely nuts!
I wanted to go back to an iPhone XR (due to the deeply irritating wrap-around screen of the Mate 20 Pro) but I'll have to find about £450 extra now to pay off the Mate... yeah, sack that.

Is Huawei big enough to start its own OS in competition with Apple and Google? As the Chinese seem not to adhere to international patent laws, what's to stop them from reverse engineering Android and pushing it out with their own unique skin over the top?
They could do exactly the same with the apps. If they don't want to play fair, might this actually cause the American companies trouble, rather than the Chinese?
I have to say that it might be good to have another OS on the marketplace. Competition breeds improvements everywhere. Since MS mobile OS died, I have wondered whether anyone else could possibly step into those shoes but also acknowledged the lead both Google and Apple already have.

Huawei are the 2nd largest mobile phone company, behind Samsung and in front of Apple (that's what I read anyway)They could do exactly the same with the apps. If they don't want to play fair, might this actually cause the American companies trouble, rather than the Chinese?

Google have already confirmed current phones will continue to be supported. They'll also get security updates to current software, but Huawei will get the updates as soon as they are released and not before. Android is Open Source, so it's not the end of the world. I ran AOSP ROMs on my previous phones, its pure Android

Wtf lol BBC: ARM suspends links with Huawei due to US ban
The lack of Google-supported Android might be a moot point if Huawei can no longer use ARM-based processors.

I'm sure huawei have the capability to steal whatever they need and implement their own OS, the biggest problem I see is the public perception. The profitable flagship market is already largely cornered by apple simply because a lot of users are apprehensive about switching to android - the huawei OS is unlikely to tempt them! That and all the bad press huawei already gets for spyware I doubt giving them even more control over how the phone operates is a selling point. I'm a little dubious of chinese brands right how - I've just got a full refund for my 8 month old doogee s60 which while not one of the silly priced handsets wasn't a cheap phone and was supposedly a more euro-focussed brand but it had zero manufacturer/brand support and my 5 year old samsung s4 backup is a better working phone. Faith has to be built. They could do exactly the same with the apps. If they don't want to play fair, might this actually cause the American companies trouble, rather than the Chinese?

This is a bit of a pain for me. I was going to order an Honor View 20 as I need to do some stuff using ARCore and distance measurement. It's pretty much the cheapest phone with a TOF sensor. The whole Huawei / US trade thing has put me off as Honor are owned by Huawei. To be on the safe side I thought I would get a Nokia 9 PureView but this isn't currently supported by Google for ARCore, If there is a price drop I could still be tempted.

This is possibly a bigger problem - ARM, who were a british company, now japanese owned, but have a few offices in the US believe that they're covered by this ruling. The lack of Google-supported Android might be a moot point if Huawei can no longer use ARM-based processors.
I won't say that I "love" my Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but it is the first phone that I've ever owned that truly works as expected. Last time that happened was the Nokia 808. Various Android phones, Windows Phones, and even iPhones that I've owned all had varying degrees of problems. The Mate 20 Pro is the first that just works.
People are worried about the phones but potentially it'll be an even bigger disaster for their laptops as their chips and OS are supplied by the yanks and so unless they begin producing their own CPUs and GPUs they wont be able to produce any more laptops! Also they'll probably have to switch to Linux, a chinese variant no doubt.
Pretty crappy situation.

I'm having some broadband woes currently and was looking at the specs of the green BT cabinet I'm connected to, turns out it's made by Huawei, as lots of them are apparently.
