Mum wants a new TV. Is this still the TV to beat and is a new one coming soon?

AG9 has either just come out or is about to.

Oops it was the kg9 we saw in John Lewis. Looked really good!

Any other suggestions to look at.

She will probably keep it 10+ years

Does it use Android OS? We have the KD43XD and the panel is fabulous (from the right angle) but the OS is poor - slow, unresponsive, crashy.

Hasn't the latest update fixed that?

I should probably say "yes" to the next reminder hehe

I'm not sure whether the OS update fixed it or the hardware - the AF9 and AG9 (pretty much the same h/w...though the AF9 actually has more memory, but a bit of a marmite stand) have more powerful hardware than older/lower end (in the Sony range) TVs. I suspect both did the trick.

I bought an AF9 in June and it's superb.

Android OS was something I wanted to allow me to ditch secondary boxes for things like Kodi. By and large it works excellently. A few quirks but most can be worked around quite easily and there's plenty of support on the net.

The one thing that remains an irritant are the TV guides...

- YouView : looks very slick and has nice navigation features...scrolling up/down pages at a time...going back in time if the catch up services have what you're watching etc. BUT no reminders nor recording capability

- Freeview : rubbish aesthetics and navigation and the catch up channels aren't integrated (you can get them as apps though). DOES have reminders and recording capability with a USB storage device attached.

Other than that, the picture is superb, and seems to be getting better with use (especially on SD channels). The sound is also very good - uses the screen as a speaker very effectively...though I have mine connected to an AV receiver (Denon - pain in the arse to set up with ARC, but once Denon advised I press one button, "Pure", it all worked perfectly).

Keep your eye on prices. Now would be a good time to buy an AF9 IMO if you can find stock as the price will be dropping with the advent of the AG9. I have mine on a tabletop stand to avoid using the Sony built in lean back job. I reckon you should be able to get one of these for under £1,800 (I did in June...and John Lewis price matched biggrin). I personally don't see any benefit in buying the AG9...the AF9 is probably better for many uses considering the extra memory.
