Quick question, if I wanted to buy a drone and have it fly up from my garden, do a lap of the village and come back. What would I need to do legally and what sort of cost-range would I be looking at for something that can do that without crapping out and dropping into someone's garden?
Unless you have a hill next to the village, its incredibly small and deserted you're going to run into issues.
Check out the site for licencing and see what the criteria for flying is.
Have you got a link? I had a quick look and it looked like under 250 grams I can fly over unconnected people, but not crowds.

I was just thinking I should have a drone and what would I use it for and I'd probably want to be able to launch it from the garden to inspect the house or see what's going on around. Then my mind wandered and I wondered if I could make it follow my kids to the park, or go and see if the traffic is bad, or check on my friend's building project, or bother them when they're mowing the grass. Perhaps I could program it to track the people that let their dogs st everywhere, detect the turd and follow them home. When it snows I could send it over to the hill to see if the cool kids are around for sledging without having to venture out in the cold perhaps.

It is a pretty small village surrounded by hills.
Here is the CAA website link:

You should get about 500m range out of the Mini 1 and I think that as the Mini 2 uses Occusync then you will get quite a bit more. However the drone code says that you need to keep it in site all the time and I found it difficult to see over about 200m especially in a grey sky.

Thanks, that's good to know if I ever buy one. 200m is probably enough to for me, I'd have to launch from the park to maintain line of sight though unless it stayed high. How low can you go? Presumably I'm not allowed to chase cars down the main street? Can you harass Pigeons with them effectively?

I picked up a Mini 1 just before Christmas and have taken it out a few times. I'm really surprised by the ease of use and I would recommend the app Maven as it allows the use of waypoints and adds a cable cam facility which allows you to set the flightpath and control the yaw, altitude and speed of the Mini. This allows some really smooth video. You can also add POIs and have the drone focus on them when flying.

My test video, I only controlled the speed and altitude. The flightpath and POI were controlled by the app.
Really good that - I'll have a look at Maven, thanks.

I was expecting the lad in the red coat to take a massive run-up and whack the ball hehe
Cheers, I was really happy with the outcome and it is straight from the drone with no edits. I only spotted the lad in the red coat after I downloaded the video. The Maven app is £15 but it does add some good features that were missing in the official DJI app. It doesn't support all their drones as DJI haven't opened the SDK for all models yet.
Doesn't support Mini 2 just yet sadly, which is what I have.

I have an FCC model I bought in HCMC and using it in Europe was a totally different experience to abroad. Range is restricted even on beaches. Worst place was Greenham common, almost unusable. Compared to my Rockpile video in VN it wasn't worth the effort unless it was close range video. Apart from the range restrictions its great.

SDK was released earlier this month, so it should be supported soon

Just had the first flight with the mini 2 around tonight, first time flying a drone and really surprised how easy and stable it was to fly, only got up about 80m and maybe 100 m out but going to have another voyage tomorrow

Good pic.

We took ours out for the first time yesterday and I was also impressed how ‘easy’ they are to fly. It was quite windy too and the drone (Mini 2) was really stable.

Looks like the Maven app now supports the Mini 2 (on iOS, at least): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/maven-for-dji-drones...

In other news, went out on an organised drive yesterday and got some good snaps from the drone:

The AI on the captioning of the above photo when it's clicked is nearly correct

The DJI Mini 3 Pro is likely to be released imminently and based on the hands on leaked footage looks to have an upgraded camera, collision avoidance and longer range and flight time whilst still keeping under 250g.

I'm thinking about donating my Mini 1 to the war effort in Ukraine and upgrading as long as it comes in at under £500, the jump from the Mini 1 to the 2 wasn't big enough for me but the 3 pro is meant to have decent low light performance which is my main bugbear as currently unless it's on a sunny day using ND filters then the image quality isn't that great.

3 Pro is expected to be over £1K as it includes a smart controller

A grand is over my budget as I'll be using it as just a hobby item, seen some leaked images of that controller, it reduces the portability quite a bit as it's twice the size of the previous one.

I hope they bring out a non pro version with same quad-copter but allows you to use your phone instead as the dji app is pretty polished and it works well currently with the workflow of getting media off the drone easily for sharing.[url]

And the screen will be of smaller size, lower resolution and less responsive than the phone in your pocket - like all prior DJI controllers with built-in screens. Not sure the attraction.

I’d love to see a controller like the Nintendo switch Joy-cons that you could clip to either side of a phone or tablet that you click together when you aren’t using them.

I use an iPad Mini 5 when flying mine, so the smart controller screen would be a definite backward step in terms of size and clarity

I want one. I've no real idea why, but it feels like the right thing to do!

Is flying in the USA now or less restrictive than the UK? Use on holiday might just tip the balance of a purchase!

Swings 7 roundabouts - you get to use FCC radio power levels ( which mean longer range/more reliable link ) but can fall foul of the FAA if you publish your video on YouTube etc. without the proper licensing frown
