Hi all

I've been using a 300Gb Maxtor OneTouch II HDD for data storage and backup.

Unfortunately, it is now not appearing as an additional HDD on the OS when plugged in.

I have done the usual in terms of attempting to fix it with Win XP Disk Manager but it's not having it. None of the Maxtor software is any good because the HDD isn't accessible.

Since Disk Manager is showing the HDD as a single 'Unallocated' partition instead of the partition I originally created I suspect the Partition Table has become corrupted.

I have run a demo version of PTDD Software's Partition Table Doctor 3.0|http://www.ptdd.com/ptdmoreinfo.htm (they also make Super Fdisk 1.0) and it also claims the Partition Table table is at fault.

So, do people have experience with this software or can you recommend an alternative? I would feel safer using recovery software that would only read the HDD and copy the files it extracts to another HDD. However, I have nothing like 300Gb of additional storage capacity to use so I think I'll have to try and restore the disk.

All comments welcome.

Cheers.

roadie.

Hi

OK, I have managed to fix this and thought I would post my solution for future reference for any other PHers who might be unfortunate enough to have the same experience.

I used TestDisk|www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html|www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html, a command-line driven utitlity and was able to fix the HDD Partition Table in about five minutes.

Commercial software that could, apparently, have achieved the same result is Norton PartitionMagiv 8.0. It also offers extensive partition management features.

So, 300Gb of data saved and I'm a happy man. Once my RAID5 NAT solution for home is fully sorted I'll be an even happier man.
