I think they make a lot of money licensing thier data through other outlets like car manufacturers, OEMs etc. There will be lots of opportunities for them in the autonomous vehice market as well.
Both companies do fitness wearables and Garmin is pretty much the leader in the field for running and fitness watches.

Runners all wear Garmins. I don't know anyone who doesn't.

I'll bite....

I do about 30k/year for work and have a TT on the dash.

I much prefer the interface and instructions, and can have live traffic if required.

As for waze - could not get on with it all.

Google maps is ok, I think Android users get a better version than Apple though I may be wrong.

I still double check the routes with Google, Live tt and also AA Roadwatch for issues if my journey is time crtitical.

Also means I can update FB and Twitter whilst en route without losing my Nav.... wink

On my iPhone I have TomTom, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, and Here (the old Nokia Maps).

These are all good at directing you from where you are to where you want to be. Two of the apps have onboard maps so only use data for traffic information.

What none of them are good for is loading a route developed elsewhere, especially a circular route, for driving days. To that end I have a Garmin in one car, and a TomTom in the other.

The TomTom is proving problematic since the iPhone was updated to iOS 13. The TomTom struggles to communicate over Bluetooth. I am currently using an old Android phone with a cheap data SIM to get data to the TomTom while the iPhone is relegated to playing music until either TomTom or Apple release an update that fixes the issue.

I can't be the only one worrry about someone using a tomtom in 2019?
Just you, everyone else is too worried about someone using this pic in 2019.
Personally I think that pic goes brilliantly with your post.
Exactly, just like using a satnav in 2019.
