I am also fifty, the replacements from Apple still had the hiss, tried a mates pair he says no hiss I can here the same noise.
If I have it set to off I hear no noise at all.

I have got used to it now so can ignore it. But can still hear it.

Still great headphone though, excellent for on flights.
