NTLWorld email may have been hacked.....
Discussion
My main email account was locked by Virgin a couple of weeks ago. When I phoned them up they told me that apparently somebody had set up an "automatic forwarding rule" on the account. They have written to me today explaining advising of several steps that I should take
Running Antivirus on all my devices
Does this need to be done on my IPhone/Ipad as well as my PC?
is Norton AV fine or do I need something stronger?
Malware
I use malwarebytes. is this sufficient or should I use something stronger? if so any recommendations?
I'm generally quite careful about the sites I visit. Does anybody know how this might have happened?

Norton is cack, If you’ve run Malwarebytes with the latest definitions and it’s not come back with anything you’ll probably find your password has been compromised rather than anything dodgy your PC. I just run Windows defender for AV. You could try Spybot search and destroy if you you want to double check your PC

De install Norton, seriously, I’ve worked in IT for 20 years, it’s the work of the devil, just run Windows defender and Malwarebytes. Running 2 Av’s will cause issues as you’ve found,
Slight problem.... One of my siblings works in IT (he built my PC and installed Norton on it). He seems to know his stuff to be fair to him (he managed to recover my PC when I had a ransomware attack a few years ago, my fault for still running Windows XP at the time). If I uninstall Norton and then get attacked he's going to look at me like I'm incompetent....I couldn't stand the smugness, I'd much rather pay some Russian hackers thousands of ££££

Easy said with hindsight but I'd ditch the ntlworld account and get a Gmail account and enable 2FA.
I would also change your NTL password to a strong unique password if you haven't already and ensure that you are not using the same password for any other service that you use.
The problem is I've had the NTLworld account for decades, so changing to a new email might cause issues. I'll have a think.I would also change your NTL password to a strong unique password if you haven't already and ensure that you are not using the same password for any other service that you use.
Thanks for all the advice/comments

At some point Virgin are going to decide that they don't want to keep supporting NTL World email accounts.
They may do this the nice way or they may do it the not unknown way which is to say they're closing it in 30 days.
Most ISPs offer email because they have to not because they want to or because they're any good at it.
I would start the migration process now to save pain later.

Deep down I know you're talking sense......however my apathy and inherent laziness is outweighing my common sense. At some point Virgin are going to decide that they don't want to keep supporting NTL World email accounts.

What about a Hotmail account? I've got one of those already. is that OK to use going forwards?

Probably. What about a Hotmail account? I've got one of those already. is that OK to use going forwards?
Well almost definitely to be fair I just have a lot of faith in Google to do security properly.
Main thing is decouple it from your ISP and make sure you enable 2FA.
People don't seem to realise that email is the key to their online life.
Want to get into someone's eBay or Amazon account? If you have access to their email just click "I forgot my password" hence strong unique passwords and 2FA.
There are outages reported at the moment.
I can only re-iterate what others have said about moving away from ISP email onto something independent like GMail or Hotmail. It's likely to take a long time to make sure you'll transferred everything across - maybe up to a year for things that are on annual subscription (car insurance for example).
Dump Norton & pay £20 a year for something like Kaspersky. Use a password manager - Lastpass, OnePassword or Keepass are good.

Good, cause running that piece of backdoor junk means you probably will be soon. Put your email address in here and you can see every time someone has got it along with the password and whatever else you have given any of the sites that come up.
https://haveibeenpwned.com
Those lists on the deepweb marketplace will have your email address, the password and whatever else you have given the sites that have been hacked.
Whether that is your paypal address, bank account or card number, usually enough for someone to start setting up new credit accounts using your details.
