She's dropped it. That black smudge in the bottom right hand corner is also a good sign it's been dropped and/or the lid has been closed on something.
Afraid it's time for a new laptop, no repair will be economical unless it's a very common laptop!
Thanks for confirming what I suspected.Afraid it's time for a new laptop, no repair will be economical unless it's a very common laptop!
If you take off the bezel round the screen you will be able to undo the screws holding the screen on place.
On the rear of the screen there will be a model number with 4 characters after it. Stick that number and the 4 characters into eBay and you will usually pickup a screen panel for around £20

Some of the vendors have detailed instructions on how to replace as well.
If you can do this, it IS an economic repair.
Put some duck tape down that side of the screen, covering the white bar and the black smudge in the corner.
Note to 10yr old that as a result of dropping it/otherwise not looking after it, the screen size has now reduced by 2in and demonstrate how to use apps windowed.
Note that next time they may not be so lucky and a screen size reduction may not be possible. At which point pencil and paper will be the only alternative.

My daughter bought three laptops for her three eldest (out of 4) for homework duties. When eldest went off to uni the youngest inherited the laptop. So far I have replaced 2 screens, 2 keyboards and two hard drives, spread over three laptops. Dead easy to do, YouTube videos can help. Now that number 2 son has gone to uni there is a spare. I’ve offered to make two good ones by combining bits from all three.
