This thread is annoying. I have a 23" 1080p monitor, and brought a 1440p similar size monitor home from work.

I noticed it to start with.... but forgot until the pixel count discussion on this thread.

Now i can't unsee the difference!!
Presuming you run them both at 100%, which resolution do you prefer?

Thanks to this thread, and cause I wanted to - I nipped into the office and grabbed 3 Dell P2210 22" screens and a slimmer keyboard.

Now i have to have a balancing act shelf on my desk to get it wide enough - its taking a while to go from 2 to 3 screens, but I can highly recommend screens of the same make and model - makes moving things around so much easier!

I need to get two monitors ASAP, would prefer as close to 30” as possible and I’ll be mixing the machines that are plugged into them so need it to be two rather than one. I’ve got a Surface Pro and a work Dell Latitude laptop. I did get some helpful advice on her from ZesPak earlier on here for the setup side but I’ve lost the comments in the following 6 weeks or so... finally managed to source a desk so ready to move from the dining table to the spare room as a proper home office, What would people recommend for monitors, don’t want to spend mega money but happy to go up to £250-300 per monitor.

Thanks

Would my laptop power two 4K monitors, somebody on another thread said it can be an issue - is there anything I need to check? Also, can you put them monitors into a dual monitor arm with the square bit at the back? Sorry for all the questions!!

Hmm not sure. Mine only has a core i3, intel 620 integrated graphics and it’s running a 4K and 1080p together no problem at all.

I’d think any reasonably newish laptop should be fine?

What's the laptop?

The square bit is called VESA. In regards to that monitor, as most desktop monitors, it has 100mm x 100mm VESA mounts.

Wall mounted monitors look 'dope'.

I've always been wary of VESA, but I was forced into it with a heavy 55' TV. To my surprise it was easy to do, and rock solid. So definitely going to follow suit with my office when I can be arsed.

Does mean sacrificing open room facing, which I agree is nice to have, when practical.

Cheers, VESA rings a bell now hehe

It’s a Dell Latitude 5490. It says intel i5-8350U CPU @ 1.79GHz 1.90 GHz and 8gb ram.

That should have no issues at all running those monitors I would have thought. Make sure you have enough outputs to run them! Not many laptops have dual HDMI for example I don’t think.

Would HDMI in one work and then USB-C to hdmi work in the other?

That bits over my head! I think it should be fine.

I actually am running my 1080p though a normal USB port as I had nothing else. Using one of these;

Plugable USB 3.0 to HDMIDVIVGA Video Graphics Adapter for Multiple Monitors up to 2048x1152 or 1920x1080 (Supports Windows 10, 8.1, 7, XP) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00A2E1MQA/ref=cm_sw_r...

The Latitude 5490 has HDMI, VGA & displayport over USB-C.

you'd need monitors that take HDMI and displayport, also this cable to go from the USB-C cable, to the displayport monitor.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DisplayPort-uni-Compatibl...

The ASUS VP28UQGL monitor has both, so you can get 2 of them.

Thanks, sorry I’m confused. I’ve got a usb c slot on the side and a hdmi slot at the back - I’m assuming it’s usb c as it works if I put a Pixel charger in there. So would I need an hdmi cable for one monitor and that you’ve linked above for the other monitor? Sorry!

No worries!

Yes, the HDMI from the laptop to HDMI on a monitor is straight forward for 1 monitor.

For the other, the USB-C port is a "DisplayPort™ Over Type C", so you need a specific type of cable for the monitor to be connected. Then it's as straight forward as plugging the USB-C end to the laptop, the DisplayPort end to the monitor. You can actually get "Displayport over USB-C to HDMI" cables.

I think it may have been me who mentioned screens not working - I found the issue with a thunderbolt dock - so you get one box that you plug into the USB-C connector, and although it has the ports to plug in 3 screens, they have to be 3 lowish resolution screens. As you are only plugging one screen into your USB-C port, you will not have this problem.

Not who you were asking, but having used plenty of screens of various resolutions, I would be surprised if anyone preferred 1080P over 1440P.

At 23", the text and icons are a similar size if you run the 1440P @ 125% (v's 100% for the 1080P) however the text and icons look far better and sharper. Naturally, if you run the 1440P at 100% you're going to get far more screen real estate but at the cost of it being very much on the small side. Some people don't mind this but for me when I'm staring at a screen for hours every day, I'd rather it was easy to read.

Personally, I run a 34" 1440P ultrawide, which is the 21:9 equivalent of a 27" monitor at 125% and find that this gives me ample real estate but very clear fonts and icons. Running at 100% is doable, just, but I wouldn't want to do it on anything smaller.

Looking at the specifications, your laptop should be able to run 2 4k screens through USB C and the HDMI port, but if you want to be sure only Dell (specs) could give you a concrete answer. Important thing is if both can be run at 60Hz (iGPU can handle this but it depends on how Dell implemented it). It might be that you would have to get their docking station to fully utilise the available throughput.

Eek, this is sounding complicated- if it’s not implemented that way would it just downscale the quality, or not work at all?
