If it's that old, it's going to be worth checking all the capacitors to see if they are shot. You will know because they will be bulging at the tops. It was computers of this vintage that had the dodgy capacitors on which caused all kinds of problems.

Having said that, it's so old that in my personal opinion it's not worth even trying to save it. You can get barebone systems now that will be twice as fast if not more for not a lot of money, especially if you go down the 2nd hand route as well.

Time to give up I think, changed the power supply and the fault is still there.

Have you tried eliminating over heating using something like Speedfan. Fre download from a lot of sites and it'll let you monitor CPU/Hard drives etc .I'tll show up temperatures inside the case on a graph with different coloured lines for each.

I don't think it will run long enough to install anything, I'd like to do a bios update
but it would shut down halfway through.

I suspect a motherboard problem so I think you may be out of luck in saving this from the scrap heap.
