Long time iPhone user. Started with the 4 and the only time I moved away was when the Lumia 1020 came out. It turned out to be an utterly stupid decision so switched back to Apple fairly quickly.

My long serving X is now at 80% battery health. Waiting to see what the 12 is like before deciding what to do.

My S2 watch is also due a replacement, as is my old iPad mini 2, could be pricey!

Original battery, capacity is now at 69%, hoping it holds out until the 12 is released...
Wow! My phone was a nightmare when the battery capacity was at 84%, it wouldn't even last through a nightshift, I can't imagine what having 69 is like.

  • awaits 69 joke*
You must have to charge that overnight and then in the day too? If you even use the phone lightly throughout the day it'll drop pretty quickly.
Yeah, I charge it overnight then again mid-afternoon, averaging about 4 hours use per day. I'm lucky in that I work from home so can charge it up whenever I want 9-5, I also use it plugged in in the car for CarPlay so that charges it too. Just means I need to be a bit careful before nights out and when I'm on holiday to either charge it then leave it on low power mode or take a powerbank with me...

Yeah that was the same for me, going abroad or on all day & night drinking session was a ballache, it just wasn't worth the hassle for me. Last thing you wanted to do was be abroad, lose your mates and have no phone battery!

Get a 12 bought when they come out, you won't regret it.

I was pretty set on getting the 12 before (my 7 Plus needs to be retired) but if that leak is true then I definitely will. The 4 felt so much more expensive than the more recent design, and didn't handle like a bar of soap when not in a case.

"Apple - take my money now!" hehe

Is it ever not in a case though? So does it matter

I take mine out of the case to put on the charging mat in my car. Otherwise it overheats and closes down.

I never used to put my iPhones in a case. I'd paid a lot of money for a nice phone that was slimline in a suit pocket and felt nice to use, so keeping it in a case was akin to putting those stupid "bra" things on a sports car to save the paint in my mind.

That changed when they turned them into bars of soap with a magnetic attraction to concrete floors!

If I go for a smaller phone this time and it is as solid as the 4 was then I probably won't bother with a case again.

Never used a case until I got the X. Main reason for a case on this was it’s chav spec white. It was available for cheap which is why a £10 case made sense

Looks like the launch has been delayed longer than I thought/hoped. I’d really like to upgrade my X .

Looks like Samsung are throwing down the gauntlet. I like the idea of a folding phone:-

It sort of makes sense if longevity can be proved not to be an issue. I still think it’s a few years off being worthy of the £££, once all the apps etc have caught up.

I think unfortunately it'll always be a product which is in ££££ not £££.

It's perverse that where TVs and other tech has always stayed stable in its pricing. Smart phones are creeping up and up and there they stay.

Yeah because suckers keep buying a new one every year just to have the latest shiny.

Which is why Apple is now worth more than the UK’s top 100 companies all added together.

I don’t know ANYONE that buys a new smartphone every year. In fact, I’ve not known of anyone to do that for five years or so, and there’s over a hundred of us in my hangar at work.

There's an advert on the telly at the mo' for exactly that; new Apple phone every year.
Strange to know the telephonic buying habits of over one hundred of your work colleagues, but then I have an armpit fetish so who am I to judge!

I suspect that’s why prices keep going north.

In the early days of iPhones I used to religiously purchase the latest phone as soon as it came out; I love new tech and back then there was a lot of advances combined with a high resale value meant it wasn't an expensive habit/hobby. Now as the technology has matured and the prices are high, I'm happy to stick with my iPhone X, which does everything I need it to do including taking great photos and is still in excellent condition. I purchased it outright when it came out and my sim only contract charge is £10 for 8gb of data and unlimited calls etc. I've also adopted somewhat of a minimalist debt free type approach to life in the last 6 months so I think I will sit out this latest launch smile

I do however understand why people spend a lot on a phone as it's the single device a lot of people use for hours each day and gain a lot of utility from. My friend has signed up to some sort of Apple plan that gets him a new phone every year but the monthly cost is IMO ridiculously high.
