I‘ve just found out that although I have 5G connection at home (in Switzerland), my provider wants me to pay an additional 33% of my monthly line rental charge to use the speed. I guess for now I‘ll just be turning off the 5G mode and getting extra battery life! 50mbits seems more than sufficient for mobile download speeds to me.
I honestly don’t get 5G and what it might it might do for a 4G phone.

I’ve never once thought 4G was slow when it was available.

I have WiFi at home that’s for when I need speed.

I certainly wouldn’t be paying more for it on a contract!

It was the same when 4G started, you had to pay more for that, give it a few months and all they’ll drop the uplift. Or increase the price of the cheaper plans to compensate!

Mate wants to buy my immaculate unlocked iPhone XS 64GB. Battery capacity is 82% though.

What’s a fair price? Music Magpie etc. seem to offer me about £320
It would cost him between £395 and £690 to buy that phone secondhand (from Music Magpie) so by selling to him for the same price they will good you means he gets a great deal and you get rid of the phone without any hassle.

Game offered approx £360 for my XS 256Gb. I put it up for sale at work for £390 and somebody had it with no haggling.

They got a phone cheaper than places like Game would be re-selling it for, and I got slightly more money but with no hassle.

That's my new approach, see the best price from Music Magpie / Game, and then add a few quid but only sell on my work site. If I get no offers, just sell to MM / Game. I do not want the hassle of eBay or Facebook Marketplace...

Oh iTunes, how I hate thee. I have been using my iPhoneXS Max for a couple of years blissfully not using iTunes. My wife decided I need a new phone because she wants one and to get the best trade in I have to unlock our current ones. That meant plugging into iTunes.

What is wrong with the dev team? They make small changes that make it totally unintuitive. I used to plug in phone and click on the iphone on the left. I can no longer do that. I have to find the tiny icon at the top of the screen. Why??? Why does clicking on the iphone on the left no longer do anything?

OK, lets back up the phone.... You can't back up and restore without turning off "find my". Hmm not sure how to do that. Turn some stuff off in the application and give it a try. This time it says again that I have to turn off "find my" but this time it tells me how. It is as if Apple are testing me! Why not tell me the first time? Oh, the instructions are wrong.

OK, restore... Do you want to update. Now I am in two minds because of the pain I have experienced before. But, I will give it a shot. Wait 5 minutes and get the "can't update due to unknown error" message.

ITunes has been st since the first ipod I bought in 2004 (and probably before that). Here's another reason why. I made 2 back ups today........

1 why cant I dictate where the back up goes? (I know the reason and its one of the ways Apple purposely fks with Windows users)
2 where the fk is it. You may be quick to point out there are instructions on Apples site. They are wrong...again. And, when they made the change, they did not tell people where it was and the made the file path hidden.

I did find the 2 full backups (why not incremental?) hidden on my m.2 boot drive. This is Apples' deliberate way of fking with Windows users. In the good old days, both Windows and Mac users probably didn't have 2 types of HHDs. Back then, iTunes would allow you to choose where the back up went. When it became popular to have a smaller boot drive and a second data drive on Windows, Apple took away both the choice and the visibility of the back up. As it happens, I have a server which I use to back stuff up to. I used to be able to do that directly. Now I have to move files around.

I am a tech person and itunes is Apple's one chance to impress me and steal me away but instead they have clearly decided to make me suffer. It makes no sense. I am their target and they have missed out on multiple PC purchases over the years.

I am sat here thinking I can't be arsed with this company again and my phone works fine so I am not going to upgrade. You may think "richest company on the planet doesn't give a st about h0b0". Well, thats how they nearly went bankrupt in 1997.

I didn’t even know iTunes was still going. Hateful when I last used it.

Haven’t touched it for years.

I think it is because I do not use iCloud for my backups so I had to use iTunes this morning.

But surely you're very much not their target, for exactly the reasons you've listed?

You want to know where the backup goes, and possibly change this. Why? I'd argue that the vast majority of iPhone users neither know nor care.

Why would you even want to interact with iTunes at all, instead of doing it all via iCloud, which I believ is what Apple try and steer you towards?

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with anything you say with regard to iTunes, and Apple's practices in general. I'm just a bit confused why you said you're the target market, when everything you've said indicates you're almost the exact opposite of that. I have always been under the impression that Apple are targeting people who don't know and don't want to know what's going on under the hood, so to speak, they just want to follow Apple's instructions on the screen.

I think the phones and the computers have a different but over lapping target. I do understand they share the "It just works" moto though which is counter to my need to specify the location of the backup. But, when backups are 50GB+ for each one I am still surprised they took away the ability to say where you wanted it to go.

I still think I am in their target demographic though and even considered a Mac book pro recently when joining a new company. Interestingly, the company removed the choice and I had to get an elite book instead.

Yes, I could pay for iCloud. But, why would I when I should not need to? They are pushing me, and others, to pay for a product out of frustration. Oh, and if you ever want to get out of iCloud you are fked. That phone will have a message on it for the rest of it's useable life.

It is st like this where they say "it just works" but internally they are clearly having meetings on how to make existing experiences worse to drive consumers to pay for something they don't need that piss me off.

Has anyone noticed how warm the 12pro gets. Mine is very warm currently, not been doing anything on it, it’s just sat on the side, no apps running and it’s toasty warm!! I know my X got warm at times but this seems to be more extreme.

i had this with a release day 7 a few years back. something wasn’t right with it, it got roasting hot and just chewed through the battery.

the person in the apple shop definitely paid attention to me, when over the 5/10mins i was in the shop it dropped 20% battery and was roasting hot. just got it swapped over on the spot.

one thing i have noticed with my new 12pro- sound/ music quality is a lot better. I don’t know why/ how, but calls seems a lot better/ clearer. also listening to spotify music through my airpods seems clearer. not sure how/ if this is even possible, i did think at times my XS was poor. but this seems better to me.

One issue with a new iPhone is that it’s apparently doing a huge amount of stuff in the background which is why for a while it will run hot and eat through the batteries

Supposedly it then gets much better.

These are very interesting comments, folks, keep 'em coming.

I used to get quite alarmed at how hot my XS will get when apparently not doing much! hehe

Now, I am close to - and beyond toying (Man-Maths in place) for - the swap, and I'd be the first to get miserable if it unexpectedly put on the same iPhone-From-Hell temperature behaviour on day1. Bit more relaxed now I know what to expect.... rofl

Same here. I traded in my 7 for the new 12 the other day. Got it home and synced with iCloud but my movies that were stored in iTunes didn't appear, but all my music tracks did appear. I decided to try and get rid of the Music tracks as Apple Music auto plays every time I get in my car!!!!! fk so I plugged into my MacBook and opened iTunes to delete the music tracks, and I probably spent half a day trying to sort it out.

Movies
I managed to get all my movies to appear on my phone when syncing to iTunes

Music
I just couldn't figure out how to delete the music tracks on my phone. When unchecking the boxes in iTunes to 'not include' the tracks, they still appeared on my phone. I ended up having to delete them on the phone itself.

Documents
When going back into iTunes and trying to check the boxes for the documents I wanted on my phone, I just couldn't get them to appear.

I gave up.

Correct, it should settle after a few days. Apparently all this processing stuff happens when new versions of iOS are installed. Lots of configuring occurring in the background.

Thanks for these warnings about the heat. Hoping my 12 Pro will arrive next week, and it’s good to know that I needn’t worry. Cheers!

Mine is due tomorrow, not Nov 2nd as originally suggested, so that’s my evening tomorrow completely gone with trying to transfer everything over and not lose music!

I wonder if many users will be using the eSIM capabilities of the 12?

I didn't upgrade from my 11P, but do have an eSIM which (was) quite useful for foreign travel as the SIM tray was free - and also possibly useful in security terms as the eSIM can't be taken out.

Mine's gone from 3-4 weeks to now not having an estimated date. I normally buy direct from Apple but have gone for Vodafone this time, do they still lock their phones to their network?
