You're not going to get a brand new best selling book for free (well not legally anyway) but there's loads of great older stuff from well known authors in there.

Or you could steal books on torrent sites.

I had no idea. I'll definitely have a look when we are allowed to go on Holiday again.

Had a Kindle Paperwhite for years and its very good - IMHO if you're going to read a lot then it needs to be one with the paperwhite type screen that has no glare and doesn't give you eye-strain - trying to read a book on a normal tablet type screen can be quite unpleasant, with the paperwhite it's just like reading a paper book except you can also brighten the screen a bit to read in the dark also.

Have you checked if the library has an online electronic books section, and if so, which format they've standardised on? That may be a cheaper option overall.
I have Kobo which is compatible with Suffolk libraries ebooks, last time I looked Kindles were not.
