Yes. You're right. It does appear on the Mac also via the Find My app. Setup of an AirTag requires a compatible iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Limitations still apply via iCloud in a browser, where it's only possible to see devices (including family sharing), and not AirTags or people - even if the people have opted into sharing their location with you.

I can confirm that my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini running Big Sur 11.3.1 do list my tags under Items. My Mac Pro still on Catalina doesn’t have the Items tab in Find My

I shall be hiding one on each of my bikes. Pondering supergluing one to my 7 year old son.

I think you need an Apple device for initial setup - but thereafter using a browser should be ok, IIRC “Find My” can be used that way.
Doesn't currently work with Find My via iCloud on a web browser. Restricted to the Find My app on the phone that initially sets the AirTag up.

The above and the inability for more than one person/family sharing members to see an AirTag are big omissions that will hopefully be addressed in future updates. As the adage goes with technology, buy when a feature is actually available and not on the promise that it will be delivered.
I set it up on my iPhone and can see it on my iPad

If it’s a push bike you can get an adapter that uses the bottle cage screws

I got one each for my wife and I (with the Belkin cases), we used to have Tile trackers, but got fed up of the rubbish implementation. Find My seems to work much better, with less fuss. When the Chipolo One Spot trackers are available, I'll likely get a couple of those too, as they are a bit cheaper and don't need a case.

I think Air Tags are just going to be the start of it, I cannot wait until things like cameras/car keys have Find My integration built in.

Do you have to buy a case to attach them to a key ring? I love Apple stuff but that kinda design really winds me up.

Will probably still get one though…

Yes, you still have to buy a case, with the official Apple ones being the same price as the AirTag itself. Hopefully eBay/every market will be filled with cheaper options soon enough.

If you see inside of one you can see why, there isn't any space to make a hole, the outer case is the speaker cone and it has a don't shaped circuit board around the speaker driver. It isn't much bigger than the (CR2032) battery. The Chipolo trackers do a have a hole for a keyring, but they are much bigger.

There seems to be LOTS on eBay already from £2.99.

Whose data is used when the third party phone detects it?
If you are worried about stalking/tracking people, then I'm afraid you are 10 years too late.

Cheap GPS trackers with SIM cards in have been available for 10 years or more, and here's the bit that will really worry you, they can be used as a listening device as well. Stick one in someones car and you will be able to track where they are at any time, and also you can call the device and it will allow you to listen live.

These things are freely available all over Ebay for £15 or so.

I think don't think Airtags are something to be worried about.

If the tag doesn't re-tether with the owner's device for three days then it starts beeping so you can't just attach it to a car & then sit back unless you are near the car every three days. Obviously though in some situations you would be.

Just drilled a hole in mine. To hopefully attach to a model rocket. Seems to be working fine still. Obviously will no longer be waterproof but I guess you could sort that with some kind of sealant in the hole if you do wished.

As per next post. Don’t just go for it. Apparently there’s a lot of circuit board around the edges. Gotta drill in the right place. I followed this vid. Skip to 1:15 to see location of safe drilling. Worked a treat for me. Ymmv!

Of all the reasons to need a keyring on an airtag, a model rocket? Is it going to be dangling? If gaffer tape is good enough for NASA...

I should probably edit. In case anyone messes up their new shiney Apple thing. Gotta drill in the correct place or you will go through the circuit board! Dead shiney apple thing!

But yes. I have lost two so far. One was 1.6m tall and bright yellow! Hoping this may help in future

Air tag will be inside the rockets btw.

Can you not just put it inside the rocket without drilling it?

Or can you not get a cheap £3 Airtag holder/mount off Ebay and glue/drill that instead, then place the Airtag inside the holder?

Bloody model rockets. Mine have a habit of landing in the only water feature available and will happily travel a long way to reach it frown

Just throwing it inside wouldnt really work. Depending upon the thing. Mostly they tend to split in half ish in order to deploy a Shute. Hence requirement for some sort of attachment. Why on Earth would I want to add more weight? When I can just drill a hole?

Anyway. A bit off topic. Was just trying to point out that you can drill them for to attach rather than having your pants pulled down for a stty £3 bit of plastic…..
