Ah yes I see those points. I kinda lose track of specs these days as so used to everything I come in contact with having an SSD etc so don't even think about slowness any more. I've been out of office work for so long I forgot that most offices still use HDDs etc.

The article actual says something completely different. It's saying if your computer isn't online for long enough it won't detect the Windows update. It says Windows doesn't check for updates until it's been online for a couple of hours and then it says that when an Update is released it often isn't available anyway for 6 hours. 6 + 2 = 8. Though anyone missed will then get it the following day so long as they manage to do 2 hours at work.

It then says it might take 2 hours to install, but might is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, given the longest W11 has taken is 4 minutes for me.

You can tell the article is complete horsehit just by reading it, it's barely legible and has no logical flow to it. It reads like the sort of bot-written drivel you get on your local newspaper website. Plus there's a clue in who posted it too.

New Windows 11 update has landed

https://www.howtogeek.com/786576/whats-new-in-wind...

  • Amazon App Store for Android apps
  • Taskbar Updates
  • Updates to Notepad and a new Windows Media Player app
My update was available within Windows Updates, however, I am unable to get the new Notepad, Media Player or the Amazon App Store from the Windows Store. The latter cannot be found by searching, and following a web link brought me to this...

However, the welcome change for me was the weather widget on the taskbar. Not only does it show the weather, which I kind of like, but it finally gives the taskbar 'balance' with centered icons; it made my teeth itch having an empty area there and a lopsided taskbar. laugh

However, it is really just a replacement for the 'Widgets' button on the taskbar. No biggy, apparently it'll be getting some third party support soon.

Could be imagining things, but it seems slightly quicker too, although it wasn't really slow to start with.

Android and the Amazon AppStore is USA only at the moment.

All the other app updates came through yesterday for some of us.

Booooo! Tbh, its not super important, but it would be nice to play with.

I guess I'll hang tight for the rest, they did say that it would likely happen in batches.

Have you tried using a VPN and logging into a US server?

No, as the poster on here only just made me aware of it smile Might be a good shout though actually, but I'm sure it'll be available soon.

I've also just seen this: Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22557

Slowly shaping up to be a half decent OS, and I say that as a Windows hater biggrin

They're still pushing the weather widget? It was unwelcome in Windows 10. I know it's easy to disable but that isn't the point.

On the machines at work it gives you the weather for somewhere 200 miles away. At home I sit next to a window (lol). What's the point in it?

Horses for courses, I don't mind it, though I agree its not very useful if its displaying weather 200 miles away! At least the taskbar doesn't look stupid now with centered icons.

I fired up my secondary desktop yesterday, pumped the last 2 win10 feature packs at it, plus the subsequent updates.
Left it on, came back this morning to find win11 offered. Said yes, let it get on with it, until it asked for a reboot. Did so; 10 minutes later it was done.
Spent two minutes with it, got annoyed at being unable to fix the weather widget, pumped more updates at it, weather widget now working.

I'd not even noticed that the feature pack came out today; I just thought yesterday that I should give win 11 a go.

I've installed KB5010414 on an admittedly unsupported laptop. After a couple of reboots I now have a machine that is spending all its time restarting explorer, which never gets as far as rendering a start button or anything useful.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

It's been running on my unsupported h/w (i7 CPU) for several hours - no problems.

Microsoft stopping Windows 10 version 20H2 support next month, so if you haven't upgraded to Windows 10 21H1 or 21H2 or Windows 11 you'll be losing security updates.

I never minded the weather widget, what really annoyed me is you can;t turn of the new information card. So if you want weather you get all the crap from the Daily mail e.t.c as well

Apparently third party widget support is coming soon - hopefully this will bring better customisation...

I've just 'upgraded' my desktop to Win11. It's more of the same I think. A big fuss for hardly anything. I like the idea of a bit better security.

Just replaced my 10 year old desktop that has served me well for something that meets the specs required for Windows 11.

My goodness what a mess this is! Yet another UI design instead of just sticking with one and being consistent. The new UI is actually quite nice but clearly unfinished so it only takes a couple of clicks and you are back to a Windows 10/8/7/NT 4.0 window or menu design.

I have a laptop (Surface Pro) and a desktop.

The laptop can't take Win11. It's quite old now and was always quite slow to use (cheap i3 model) so I'll replace it but I will wait for the autumn when apparently there are new Surface products coming out. I quite fancy an ARM version (Surface Pro X).

The desktop - I will wait for the autumn Win11 update which is meant to fix a load of stuff.

I use both for work so I'm a bit risk-averse with upgrades.

I've probably said this before, but the OS should be largely invisible. Rather than messing around with the bits you see, just build new options and let the user decide what they want to use.

Windows 10's fullscreen start menu was best by miles, just waiting for that to come back....
