I think the backlog of people who were prepared to pay sixteen hundred quid and get a full on 4090 has been pretty much tapped out at this point. And the 4080 is considerably less powerful than the 4090 yet still a couple of hundred more than a grand. That is serious cash for just a graphics card for your PC.
We won't see real sustained demand for the RTX40xx range til cards are available below £700 in my opinion. And I'd be surprised if the 40xx that are comparable in price to the sub £700 30xx are actually much more powerful for games. The advantage is likely to be lower power consumption and a few new features.
Well my 4090 FE arrived this afternoon. Great packaging, Sonos level stuff (as it should be for the price I suppose). Currently sat in presentation mode on my desk as the new power supply doesn't arrive until tomorrow.
Glad I waited for the FE. Aesthetically it's ace. The fact it's the "cheapest" model is a bonus really (given the next one up is another 10% in price). I'm hoping the aluminium frame will be strong enough to not need a support bracket.

If you are gaming and aren't going to be running at 4k any CPU right now will be a bottleneck to a 4090. Really the Ryzen 9 7950X and Intel i9 13900k are the only two that will get your moneys worth out of the 4090 at 4k unless you are buying long term for next gen Intel (Meteor Lake by rumour looks to have been dropped in favour of a Raptor Lake 13th Gen refresh next year) or AMD Zen 5.Digger said:

The 1660 Super will be 10-25+ fps better than a 1060. Have a look on youtube for "1660 Super vs 1060" find one at the resolution you play at and the games you play and see what they are, try more than 1 video the results will be the same but the numbers may be slightly different based on the test config used (CPU, RAM).Thanks - I currently have a lowly i5-3570K paired with a 1660 Super. Let's take World of Warships for example which isn't hugely taxing & works great at 1080p no real issues.
I may be getting a 55" 4K TV soon which I may connect with the PC occasionally to try WoWs in 4k.
What would be the best value GPU upgrade for playing 4k WoWs? This may not even be possible & would I eventually have to upgrade the CPU for this specific scenario?

I'm very happy with my EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra (which is exactly the same card Gamers Nexus us in their benchmark list), only the 4090 is an upgrade in my eyes but I don't need it unless I get a fast refresh 4k monitor which I haven't yet.
Ps. RTX 4090 FEs are available and have been since 11am this morning.

The thing is that the RTX40xx cards so far have all been great performers ... it's just that they have got the pricing very wrong.
They always try to push up the prices of their various levels (60 / 70 / 80) with every new generation but this time it's ludicrous. Performance has increased, sure, but thanks to the prices they are asking the bang-for buck on the 4070 Ti and 4080 isn't really any better than the 3080. The 4090 is impressive but it's the Halo card that is out of the range of most.
I'm guessing that the plain 4070 is going to perform roughly the same as the 3080 and cost pretty much the same RRP. Sure, you get lower power consumption/heat but isn't really a winning proposition and worse, there aren't really any tempting upgrade paths for existing 3080 owners.
They are lucky that AMD have slipped up a bit with the RDNA3 cards.
