RTX 4090 - $1599 from Oct 12th

RTX 4080 (16GB) - $1,199 from November

RTX 4080 (4070 spec) 12GB - $899 from November.
So still stupid prices. Also note the UKP prices are going to be HIGHER than they USD ones. I mean parity was nasty but vaguely understandable, higher is just stupid.

Looks like I'm using this 1070 till it explodes then, but we'll see what the prices are when the cards actually appear. I suspect Nvidia will be in for a shock at those prices as not many gamers are going to have that sort of money to spend (ofc some will - hell, I could too, but I'm struggling to justify it). Hopefully crypto will move on to something less power hungry too, so no market left for them there.

I wonder how much Gigglebit are going to ask for this monstrosity - https://www.overclock3d.net/news/gpu_displays/giga...

Look at the size of the thing and I don't just mean the length or slot size, look at how much above the top of the backplate there is!

358.5mm x 162.8mm x 75.1mm

The larger 4000 series cards will kill off vertical mounting for many, unless they drill holes in their tempered glass side panels biggrin

We're a smaller market so get less economies of scale, but don't forget USD prices don't include VAT whereas UKP ones do.

US Sales tax, average 5.09%. Add that onto a $1599 card and it's the slightly more than us.

Looking at the specs of the 4080 vs the 4090, the lower card is really not the value proposition any more as the gap in specs has grown significantly since the previous 30x and 20x series. The delta in memory bus and shaders is massive with this series and the 4080 should really be branded the 4060 to be consistent with previous releases.

With the continued collapse in ETH crypto mining I can only predict a massive drop in demand and NVIDIA's shareprice. I'll be holding out for a 3080ti or 3090 at a bargain price.

A 3090/3090Ti will be better than all but the 4090 in all probability, with the exclusion of DLSS3 which only the new cards have. Everyone else will be stuck on DLSS2.

If you can get a new one for under £1K it’s probably a better bet when faced with the new cards pricing.

Might have considered a 4090 if the pricing hadn’t been so mental. Skipping this gen now unless RDNA3 pulls something out of the bag in a few weeks.

But which 4080?

4080 12g (maybe a 4070 in disguise) or 4080 16g?

If you put the alleged performance increases into context could be looking at it as either a nice jump in performance for a similar £:
  • 3060 (£349) = 4050 (£xxx)
  • 3070 (£469) = 4060 (£xxx)
  • 3070Ti (£529) = 4060Ti (xxx)
  • 3080 (£649) = 4070 (£xxx)
  • 3080Ti (£1049) = 4080[12g] (£949)
  • 3090 (£1399) = 4080[16g] (£1269)
  • 3090Ti (£1879) = 4090 (£1679)
...or same performance for less £:
  • 3070 performance = £469 = 4050 (£xxx)
  • 3070Ti performance (£529) = 4060 (£xxx)
  • 3080 performance (£649) = 4070 (£xxx)
  • 3090 performance (£1399) = 4080[12g] (£949)
  • 3090Ti performance (£1879)= 4080[16g] (£1269)
  • 4090 (£1679) = 3090Ti Super Duper
But I do wonder what the huge (20%) fall in the value of the £ will have done to those prices, considering it was £1:$1.3 in 2020, vs £1:$1.1 now.

Maybe real performance will not be so obvious impacted but looking at the CORES and Memory Interface the 4080 cards are a real step down from the 4090.

I tried to wake up my Exertis account which I've not used for six years. They said that I'd have to reapply. I remember where they were P&P, and I remember when P&P were Pete & Pam and they sold Apple ][.

I still don’t get why you’d spend so much for gaming.

I recall a friend paying £230 for a TNT 2 Ultra and I had the TNT1 for about £115.
Yes it was lots faster but hard to justify.

We’re now at £2,000+

It’s mind numbingly odd.

The 4090 isn't a mainstream gaming card though. It's for enthusiasts that will pay whatever to have the best and people that are using it for other stuff (rendering, etc.)

The mid range cards like the 4060 (which hasn't been released yet) is what most gamers will be looking at.

Yeah but still.

I'm an enthusiast but I couldn't justify that much... maybe if I were making £250,000 a year and didn't have a wife or kids...?

And I do rendering for work, and even then I can't justify it... and if I could/did have that much rendering to do I'd be farming it out for lower overall business cost vs investing in depreciating assets.

No way you try to justify it, the pricing is not acceptable. Non of the tech chanel's think it is coupled with the power, the heat and the atx 3power supply need or risk your house burning down lol

ATX 3.0 power supplies aren’t needed as long as you’ve got the minimum recommended wattage power supply, or if you don’t want to use the adapter.
