Looking to change networks and 3 seem to be getting things sorted around here so i'm looking to change from my SE P900 to a video smartphone.
I am looking for something with similar features to the P900 and ive narrowed it down to about the only 2 available.
Nokia 6680, i like the look of it and no touch screen so no little pen to play with, good battery life but not sure if it will do everything my P900 currently does.
Motorola A1000, this looks good but a little bigger than the P900 but with what looks like similar features.
anybody with experiance of either?

Which toy :scratchchin:

Cheers

Take a look at the orange M500.

(Which is obviously not 3, but how often will you use the videophone anyway?)

Just ordered an MDA Pro from T Mobile today, also goes by the name of SPV 5000 on Orange I think. It does everything and works on 3G too. Its a pocket PC, phone, camera, video camera, WiFi etc etc. It is not released yet but expect it to be about £400. See more here:

www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/n/6142.html

Expected to become available in the UK this month, with preference to new subscribers (not me then!). Does everything I want and alot more. I'll be using it for Sat Nav as well when I get the software and bluetooth GPS receiver. Maybe worth a look.

SE P900

Good choice Mine has done me proud for a year odd. Wait until SE release the P1000 - Shouldn't be too long I don't think..
But definately have to get it on Contract- will work out a lot cheaper!

Dave.
EDIT: You can get Video Software for these phones AFAIK for sending/rec video live.

What are you being left behind by?

I wouldn't touch 3 with someone elses pole...

Their net access is ringfenced, ie you can't surf the net at 3G speeds unless it's to a 3 site.

Lousy coverage for 3G

Customer service that is truly dire.

All the guys I know who have tried 3 have cancelled the contract within the first week...

I'm using an Orange SPV M500 and I can't fault it

It's small enough to be a phone (and infact is thinner then most phones, although wider) but big enough to be a useful PDA and games machine

GPS and TomTom work very well too

Avoid the SPV M2000. Firmware is buggy as hell and stops you receiving calls and texts until you reset it, amongst many other annoying things.

Anyone got a cheap bog-basic phone with bluetooth they want to sell?

Expansys will sell you an OEM SPV phone that'll run on any network. They're called iMate or something equally lame.

iMate-JAM?

This is the same as the Orange SPV M500

I got my GPS receiver from Expansys, they refunded the postage when it took 3 days instead of next day delivery

Some stuff about 3

I agree wholeheartedly with Chris. If you have the opportunity to try the '3' network where you are most likely to use it then it would be a good idea.

The problem with '3' is that it prioritises the 3G network so if the phone is receiving 3G, no matter how bad the signal, then that is the network it stays with. It is only when it loses the 3G signal altogether that it reverts to a 2G network. What this means in practice is that there are areas where you would normally expect a good signal where the phone is virtually unuseable. Until they erect more dedicated 3G transmitters or allow you to choose to use a 2G network on the phone if 3G reception is poor I can't see the situation improving.

Despite having a contract that gave me umpteen 'free' minutes and texts per month I ended up buying myself out of the contract and going back to Orange as I wasn't able to use the phone at home, in the office or the middle of town due to the problems outlined above.

Found it.

iMate Jasjar is the new gadget I have ordered - not out in the shops yet in the UK, just out in the USA - this is what various companies are branding with their own identity - Orange SPV 5000, T-Mobile MDA Pro.

The iMate thingys look good, running a windows based OS are they?
With regards to 3 i know they are not perfect, but around here network doesnt seem to be too much of an issue, a friend has more coverage with his 3 phone than he ever did with Orange. The web browsing seems ok but i have never tried his phone for it.
Would like to stick to Vodafone where possible but there 3G is probably just as questionable.. but i may get better coverage.

Windows Mobile 5.0. Therefore can run Pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Money etc plus lots of other software e.g. the Sat Nav stuff.
