Anyone on here use it to any extent?
I'm attempting to ascertain whether the hardware I'm using is performing as it should and would like a means of comparison.

thanks,
D

Use the workstation version heavily, fantastic product, but have never used the server stuff, sorry.

Hi Darren,

Yes, use ESX *fairly* extensively, but my experience is limited to relatively few hardware platforms, but I might be able to help.

I'm also VMware certified, so in theory I should know what I am talking about!!!

ESX is very picky about what base hardware is, I went with GSX in the end... and been running 8 servers continuously for the past 12 months without any problems.

You might be able to help then (though I don't put much faith in a VCP certificate)!

I'm using a certified hardware platform (popular manufacturer, 4 cpu, 16GB memory, SAN etc) and trying to work out whether I'm getting reasonable disk IO.

I've also got a pre-production (very high spec) server which is producing some great results (120Mb/sec onto a pair of mirrored disks from a single VM).

However, my usual hardware platform is struggling to get anywhere near that.

Would you mind taking a look at ESXTOP and seeing what you get on your VM machines. If you've got a development box, something like IOMETER (which is downloadable should be able to stress it).

cheers,
D
