trying to sort a friends PC out, used all of the spy softwares possible, and it found altnet and kazaa
I have removed them, but the symptons are:
Cant get into the user area, not are any active X's being downloaded
Tried following the removal of Altnet, but it involves taking ownership of the key in the registry and I cant see the user name.
Any thoughts???
Dont want to do a rebuild!

So no ActiveX controls work? Can you give more information on what you mean by not being able to get into the user area, is this in a program, or area of the hard disk, or registry?
In MS antispyware, you can use the system explorers to view the installed activeX controlls, browser helpers etc this might be useful to you?
Hope this helps
Rebuild? XP right??
1) Just put in the XP disc, reboot,
2) wait for the Install Windows prompt,
3) wait till it asks you if you want to do a Repair installation with the Recovery Console - say NO
4) Continue till it says "Searching for previous Windows Instalations".
5) When it finds your install it will ask you "Repair This Installation" Take this option.
Windows will now install just the systems files needed and leave your instalation intact. Takes about 45 mins depending on the speed of your PC.

I think the sam file has gone, or being corrupted
The user area, is either the management console, or user accounts under control panel
I think I am going to have rebuild, as the kazaa and friends have really done a lot of damage!
It came as part of an email solution, cant remember the name at the moment, but will post up here so all are aware!
