Telephone support, anyone?
Discussion
Would anyone be willing to give me a call, and talk me through the master/slave HD setup problems over the phone? I will insist on returning the gesture in beer vouchers, I really do need this fixed tomorrow as I have hours of setting up to do before work on Monday.
How do I plead, without looking like Im begging Is anyone willing to give it a try? A thousand thanks in advance either way

What have, and havn't you tried?
I don't think that there's much to it. You'll need to have details of the jumper settings for each of the drives, otherwise it's just guesswork. Usually there are instructions on a label on the drive it's self.
Configure one to be master and one to be slave. One end of the cable goes into the motherboard, the free end has two IDC connectors which go to the two drives. It does matter, I think, which of the drives goes onto the far end of the cable, but I can't remember if it's master or slave.
Enable both master and slave devices in the BIOS, if they're not autodetcted. Boot up, partition and format away.
Mail me, if you want my phone number, but I have to say, without my own eyes on the job I think it would be difficult to figure it out.
That's not to say it wouldn't be easy for someone who is familiar with your make and model of drives/motherboard/software.

persicely what are you trying to do bob ? in detail
like dilbert has said you need to set drives up as master and slave twith jumper settings some drives can be a pain and need a second jumper to tell it there a slave present ie segate drives
the jumper setting are allways on the drive on the labbel.
but what is the problem you having.
and yo only need to set BIOS to auto on the drives for most newer boards
is it installing the drives you having troble with or setting up windows onem you having problems with
ie second drive ont showing up in widows as that could just be it needs partioning.

i have two drives from my old pc, c:windows and d:work files
I need to plug the drives in to the new pc, and I am trying to get them to work, one at a time.
The new pc has
1) new type of hard drive connection (sata? thin red wire)
2) dvd drive
3) dvd drive
I have unplugged one of the dvd drives and have got the pc to boot up in c:windows using my old c: drive. BUT, when I get to the password login screen, my mouse/keyboard doesnt work
I am still experimenting with the jumper settings. There are 5 settings on my old drives (5 settings on each drive). Im sure ive tried them all, but i keep getting an "NTLDR is missing" error message on each of the various settings. Or, I boot up into windows but my old drive isnt in the list on windows explorer. Or (the one instance of success) ... I DO boot up into windows using the old operating system, but when i get to the login screen, my mouse/keyboard doesnt work.
Praps it would be easier to get it working if someone was here.

right firstly i take you mean new pc has hard drives thats sata or you only have the two old one if you havent got sata drives forget sata
well you old drives wont plug in that sata trust me
first put the two dvd drive on the secondare ide channel if ones a writer set that as master and the second dvd rom as the slave set on the jumpers
then put the first drive ie c: set on the jumper as master and set the d work as slave and put thease on the primary ide channel
then check that the bios is set for auto detect on primary ide and secondary ide
some boards wont find the cd drive un less you turn off auto on where they are to complicate thing
when you messind around look to see what dives are found from the bious as you boot hit the break key to stop the boos as post screen comes up if shoots off scree to quick
NTLDR is missing error is probley because window has got coruptedfrom the many rebbot and windows is trowing its toys out of its pram
www.tinyempire.com/shortnotes/files/ntldr_missing.htm
this may help with that
you quite right abot it would be a 5 min job if someone was there that know how
telling someone and vislising the problem is hard when doing on the phone thats why tech support guys use emulators to gon trow it with you.
in txt is a nightmare
